Michael Bay, 2001 Pearl Harbor is a Michael Bay’s movie; it recounts of a love story set during the Japan’s attacks to the naval base of Pearl Harbor during the second World War. The film begins in Tennessee, in 1923, two children Rafe and Danny playng dreaming of being aviators. After a time jump the protagonists are in Long Island, in January 1941, their dreams of being aviators has come true: they are enrolled by the American air force. During the enlistment Rafe falls in love with Evelyn, a nurse. The couple, in New York, meets with their friends and Rafe communicates to Evelyn that he would leave as a volunteer of war in support of the RAF the following morning. Before his departure, Rafe makes Danny promise that if he didn’t come back home, because of his death, he would have to tell it to his girlfriend, Evelyn. Danny and Evelyn are transferred to the base of Pearl Harbor. During a mission the plane where Rafe was in, was shot down and reported missing, everyone believed that he was dead. Danny promised Rafe that he would take care of Evelyn if he died but after some time they fall in love. A few weeks later, on the evening of 6th December 1941, Rafe goes to Evelyn explaining her that he survived the accident driven by the love for her. Rafe managed to open the plane’s door while it was sinking; he was rescued from a french fishing boat but the France was occupied, so he couldn’t send messages about the events that actually happened and declared that he was alive. After they sit on a bench, Rafe declares his strong feeling for Evelyn again and after a kiss she dodges and looks at Danny. Rafe immediately understand the truth and he goes away, without saying a word to his friends. The same evening the two friends meet in a club on the beach, Danny wanted to clarify the situation but Rafe breaks out a fight and the two run away together, without knowing what would have happened the next day. The day later, December 7th 1941, the Japan prepares to attack Pearl Harbor with planes. The United States believed that the planes were the P-17 that were coming back to the base. The Navy manages to intercept messages from Japan declaring the attack but no one could understand where it would take place. Arrived in the vicinity of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese begin to drop bombs on the entire military base, even under water and shooting with the machine gun on military and civilian people. During the attack the three protagonists work together to save the victims and bring down the Japanese planes. Once the attack is over Rafe and Danny are called to take part in a secret mission. On April 18th 1942 the united states air forces try to land in japan; Japanese soldiers had noticed planes and once they managed to land, they started shooting at the Americans and also hit Danny who dies few seconds later. Rafe confess Danny that Evelyn was pregnant; Danny said that Rafe should have been the father of his son. The Americans back home. The movie ending with Rafe and Evelyn taking care of their baby, Danny, and behaving like a happy family. I liked the film very much, it is very detailed and with time jumps that make sure not to stay with suspense. Thanks to this film I have understood many more things concerning the Second World War and I am sure I can enrich my personal background through this vision. I was nailed to the screen for three hours because I was sure it was a film that would serve to enrich the pages already studied and what I will study but I did not expect you to be so beautiful. It is a film that I will see again.
