ROBINSON CRUSOE PLOT Robinson Crusoe, a young man from York, had a desire for adventure and became a seafarer despite his father's wishes for him to stay home and study law. On his first journey, his ship sinks in a storm and he is saved. On his second and third journey, he becomes successful but is later taken by pirates and made a slave. He escapes with the help of a Portuguese ship and journeys to Brazil where he becomes a successful planter. Despite his success, adventure calls again and Robinson sets out to find slaves for his plantation. But, the ship is wrecked in a storm and he is the only survivor. He lands on an uninhabited island, takes some food, guns, and other useful items from the ship before it sinks. He begins to keep a record of time, builds a fence, a tent, and even a summer retreat. He tames goats, milks them, and makes cheese. He learns to make pots, baskets, and even an umbrella. He falls ill and has a religious experience. He discovers a footprint and fears cannibals. He releases a victim, who he calls Friday, from the cannibals and teaches him English and Christianity. He welcomes two more members to his community and eight days later an English ship arrives and he releases the prisoners and discovers the crew are mutineers. He manages to confuse them and tells them they can't leave until they return to face justice. After eight and twenty years, two months and nineteen days, Robinson returns to England and finds his family are dead but his savings are safe and his Brazilian plantation is a success. He sells it and makes a considerable fortune and finally, returns to his island as a trader and finds it to be a prosperous colony well governed by the Spaniards.
