Post-War Drama The drama traditional forms couldn't express the social revolution and changing values of Britain. There were two main trends in new drama: Absurd and Anger. Martin Esslin apllied the therm absurd to the works of dramatists who emerged in 1950s: Beckett, Adamov and Ionesco. The dictionary meaning is: out of harmony with reason or propriety, illogical, ureasonable. The theatre of the absurd tends to debase language: what happens on the stage transcends, and often contradicts the word spoken by the characters. The plays are the reflection of dreams and nightmares. Since the 60s the content of british plays has become more and more iconoclastic and revolutionary. Young dramatists were all protesting angainst society and against the inadequate way it was being changed. The abolition of censorship in 1967 gave playwrights more freedom to deal with subjects which were concerning british people. The most significant development in British theatre was the rise of social theatre. So an increasing number of fringe studios companies were formed, and several of the most interesting playwrights perceived issues at a social or psychological level. The shift to the right of the political opinion in Britain caused the decline of the fringe theatre. On the other hand Ireland is experiencing renewed theatrical activity in a serier of remarkable works from living playwrights.
