This scene is a reference to O liver Tw ist and H ard Tim es, tw o other C harles D ickens novels that are about social injustice. D IC K EN S A N D C H ILD R EN D ickens’ w ritings helped to generate public support that led to the hospital’s founding The educational w orth of D ickens’ w orks is undim inished by tim e, and it has even been suggested that w orks such as O liver Tw ist could serve today as a textbook of child abuse. The novel enum erates the risk factors of abuse, including alcohol, dom estic violence and m ental illness. It catalogs in unforgettable detail a variety of form s abuse can take: institutional, em otional, physical and sexual. A nd it outlines num erous sequelae of abuse, including physical and m ental ailm ents and disabilities, poor self-esteem , and general vulnerability to exploitation. In this story the social battle against the poverty, typical of D ickens’ novels, is clearly expressed The w riter w as deeply conscious of social injustice, political incom petence, the poverty and the suffering of the great m ass of people, and the class conflicts of Victorian England. The result w as an increasingly critical attitude tow ards contem porary society. D ickens com bines the sentim ental, m elodram atic story w ith keen social satire and realism .
