MARY SHELLEY Mary Shelley  Mary Shelley was born in London in 1797 and died in 1851 due to a brain tumor. She was the daughter of William Godwing and Mary Wollstonecraft Godwing, two great intellectual rebels of the time. Eleven days after her birth, her mother died leaving her father to look after Mary and her sister. Godwing got married again with his neighbor Mary. Mary had a formal education thanks to her father’s library. She fell in love of one of the disciples of Godwin, Percy and went with him to France but he was already married. Mary and Percy married in 1816 when the first wife killed herself. They had a happy but short marriage because he died. A year later Mary returned to England where she dedicated to the career of writer, so that she could support her son. One of her most famous horror novels is Frankenstein. The Creature Born from the hands of Victor Frankenstein assembling pieces of corpses, the monster is scary, but has the mind of a child. He tries to integrate into society, but is rejected for his too ugly appearance that scares anyone who meets him. After constant rejection and mockery in the creature a feeling of anger and vengeance arises, but it is not the only emotion that arises in him. So the creature, as Victor recounts, is torn between compassion and anger and not even the death of its creator, so coveted, makes him happy because in the end it was the only human relationship he had. Caroline Beaufort Caroline is Victor's mother. He died of scarlet when Victor was 17. She was very social, especially with regard to helping families in poverty. Alphonse Frankenstein Alphonse Frankenstein He's Victor's father. He suffers from his son's suffering, which leads him to an unhappy old age. Henry Clerval Henry Clerval is the best friend, the one who helps Victor in his time of need. he is killed by the monster after Victor breaks the promise of creating a companion to the monster. He studied languages at university and was completely oblivious to Victor's creation. Justine Moritz Justine Moritz is the maid of Frankenstein's family. Accused of William's murder, Justine is the phlegmatic martyr who faces death with grace and dignity. His death symbolizes the death of all that is just and noble. MAJOR THEMES IN FRANKESTEIN • THE SCIENCE: Extreme science that goes beyond its limits and then becomes guilty and almost satanic to the point that it can only lead to misfortune. • THE MODERN PROMETHEUS: The modern Prometheus, which refers to the Prometheus of Greek mythology rebelling against Olympus that’s compared to Victor who's an individual who knowingly violates a divine command. Although he exaggerated it must be said that Victor is a very ambitious guy. • THEME OF THE DOUBLE: Victor Frankenstein and the creature, in the end, seem almost to be twice as much as each other: if on the one hand the scientist wants to give his life from death, the monster instead creates death. it's like one is the other's alter ego. • THEME OF HUMAN PREJUDICE AND FEAR: Prejudice is seen in this novel as a defect that leads to the destruction of people. Humans assume that the monster must be dangerous based solely on aesthetic appearance, but in reality the monster was born innocent and generous. It is precisely the prejudices he encounters that convince him of man's barbarity. The only man who treats him humanly is a blind man, De Lacey. FRANKENSTEIN'S PLOT Frankenstein or the modern Prometheus is a Gothic, horror, science fiction novel written by british author Mary Shelley between 1816 and 1817, at the age of 19. It was published in 1818 and edited by the author for a second edition in 1831.  PLOT: Victor Frankenstein is a young scientist from Geneva, who, driven by the ardor of scientific research, finds a way to create life. He builds a human creature with pieces of corpses, but is terrified of the monstrosity of his creation. The monster escapes and is stained with horrific crimes, killing Frankestein's younger brother William and dropping the blame on the housekeeper, who is executed. During a hike on Mont Blanc, Frankenstein meets the monster, who has taken refuge on the peaks, and tells him his story. In him there was a native goodness and kindness, a need for love and communion with men; but the men had rejected him and persecuted him, terrified of his monstrosity. Unhappiness had made him evil, generating in him the desire to take revenge on his creator, who had not cared for him. He asks the scientist to create a companion for him, who loves him and disavies his loneliness with him. Frankenstein promises, and retires to work in the desolate nordic landscape of the Orkney Islands; but then, horrified by the prospect of a progeny of monsters that can come to populate the land, he does not keep his commitment and flees to Ireland. The monster takes revenge by killing the dearest friend, Henry Clerval, of the scientist. In Ireland, Frankenstein is arrested on charges of Clerval's murder; only the arrival of his father allows Victor to be acquitted and return to Geneva. Here he marries Elizabeth, who the monster kills on the wedding night. Frankenstein's father learned the news dies of pain. Frankenstein hunts the monster in the most remote and wild places, right down to the glaciers of the Arctic. But here, exhausted, he dies, after telling his story to Robert Walton, the captain of the ship that picked him up. The monster, now paying for his vengeance, reappears, expressing on the coffin of his creator his unhappiness and despair, and disappears into darkness, in search of self-destruction.
