The preface of the picture of dorian gray -Story: -written by oscar wilde and pubblished in 1891 -the story of dorian gray, the protagonist is connected to the story of dottor faustus, a man who sells his soul to the devil according to satisfy all his desire. In the novel the soul is the picture which records the sins of the time, the corruption the horror and the sins that are under dorian gray timeless beauty -this picture at the end restored to its original beauty, because every excess must be punished and there is no escape from the reality. When dorian destroies the picture he cannot avoid the punishment for all his sins that is death. PREFACE -oscar wilde’s preface to the picture of dorian gray consist of a list of oscard wilde’s aphorism that deal directly with art, artist and critics, but obliquely to the novel -they speak to the importance of beauty exposes by the aesthetic movement -the artisti s the creator of beautiful thinks and the aim of art is to revel it self, but also to conceal the artist. Critic can translate his imporession of art into another, and is actually a mode of autobiografy. -to find ugly meaning to art,so beautiful things is a fault, while find beautiful nthing in a beautiful things is to be cultivated -art rapresent the cult of beauty that could prevent the murder of the soul -è la vita che prende spunto dall’arte e non viceversa (come dice d’annunzio) MODERNISM -is the period after world war 1. The horror of the world had shaken the certains of pre-war society, by a sens eof disillusioment and fragmentation -the shift from the victorian to the modernism was casuated by a gradual but sustanial transformation of british society -the novelist had a new role, the mediator between a solid past whith a confused present. From the analisis of the society to the analisis of the individual -there are a new concept of time and a new teory of unconsciuos -the modern novelist rejected omniscent narrator, and spereimented new methods to portray the individual consciousness. The viewpoint shifted from the external to the internal world of a characther’s mind -ainstein theory of relativity and bersong’s theory of time -time is subjective and internal -willian james coined the phase “stream of consciousness” to define the continuous flow of thoughts and sensations that define the human mind. The interior monologue is the verbal expression of this psysical phenomen -the first and second group of poets analise the mind, instead the third one the political and social problems INTERIOR MONOLOGUE -novelist adopted the interior monologue to rapresent the unspoken activity of the mind. -the narrator is in the position to observe and only record s what the characters thinks or says without interferring There are 2 kind of interior monologue: • Direct = where the narrator seems not to exist and the caracther’s thoughts flow without control, not interrupted by external events • oExternal • ointernal • Indirect =the narrator never let the character’s thoughts flow without control and grammatical organisation
