Introduction 1.1 Greeting and subject of presentation Good morning/afternoon (ladies and) gentlemen I'd like to welcome everyone to... First of all, let me introduce myself. My name's XYZ and (as some of you may know) I'm in charge of/responsible for/I’m the ....the topic of my talk (this morning) is... I'd like to say a few words to you today about... I'd like to give you just a brief outline of.../overview of 1.2 Duration I’ll be with you here for about … minutes, then we’ll move off to visit … It'll take just over/under five minutes but I think during that time I can give you a clearer picture of... I shall only take up about 15 minutes of your time. 1.3 Organisation/headlines I'll divide things up into three main sections/parts First, I'm going to talk briefly about... Second I'm going to talk in a bit more detail about... And thirdly, finally, if I have time I'd like to deal with... For convenience, we can discuss ... three main aspects the (painting) under three main headings I have four main things to say/mention/points to make 1.4 Encouragement of dialogue/when to receive questions Please feel free to interrupt me if anything's unclear or you have any points you want to raise/bring up If you have any questions I'll try and deal with them as we go along/at the end (if that's OK?) 2. Increasing clarity 2.1 Giving examples Perhaps an example will clarify my point... Let me give you an example to clarify this... It will be clearer if I give you a specific example. Let's take the case of... To give you just one example... Let me illustrate my point. For instance... 2.2 Clarifying through rephrasing If I can put it in a different/another way * To put it another way ...or rather I should say... So, in other words... That is... Perhaps I haven't made myself very clear. Let me put it another way... To be more specific... 2.3 Checking/ensuring understanding OK? If that's clear perhaps I can move on... Is this/my last point clear? Would you like me to repeat that? 3. External structure/bridging points 3.1 Beginning the first point So, to start with, then, let's look at.. OK. Now, first of all let's begin by... 3.2 Finishing each point So, we've looked at... That's all I have to say about... So, to summarise my first point 3.3 Starting new points/listener orientation Now let's turn to/focus on.....(as you may know) I'd like now to look at/move on to...(you maybe aware that) Let's move on now to...(this problem may be familiar to you) If I can move on to my second main area...(you've probably read in the newspapers recently..) 3.4 Verbal punctuation for gaining attention and moving on Right Good OK Now then Right then Fine Communication point • Most audiences like to know where they are in a presentation - how far they have come, where they are now and how far they have to go - and this is greatly helped by the bridging language seen above. • These phrases are particularly useful for a non-native speaker who doesn't have the natural language resources to use intonation and sophisticated rhetorical devices spontaneously to create the same structuring and bridging effects. 4. Conclusion 4.1 Summing up That brings me to the end of my last point. OK. So, to sum up ... So to summarise... I've talked about /looked at.. I hope I've shown you how ... and, finally, I made some (tentative) suggestions regarding (the origin of the dance/other places of interest) 4.2 Concluding - "...and I'd now like to conclude with two recommendations.." - "... and this last point brings me to my conclusion..." So, that's obviously a simplification, but a think it does give you a clearer picture of.. OK. I think that covers everything. 4.3 Inviting questions Now, can I answer any questions? Are there any questions which anybody would like to ask? Now. I'd be interested in your comments/reactions. Does anybody have any points they want to raise/bring up? 5. Internal structure/logical development of ideas 5.1 Contrasting/balancing ideas I don't think I'm the right person to answer that question... I think Mr X, our XYZ specialist, could help you on that one... is more qualified to answer that for you... I don't have the exact figures to hand... I can't tell you off hand... ... but I can get them for you if you like I can find out for you 6.2 Understanding the question When you speak in English to people from other countries, you may find it difficult sometimes to process what they are saying; a native speaker might speak too fast or swallow his words, a non- native speaker might have a strong accent or mispronounce words. Different cultural backgrounds might also make it difficult to follow the way people think. In cases like these, you need to be able to check that you've heard or understood the information correctly. You can do this by: 6.2.1 Asking for repetition (you didn't hear) I'm sorry. I didn't hear what you said... I didn't catch that... I missed that .... could you repeat the question, please? 6.2.2 Asking for repetition (you didn't understand) I don't think I follow you... I'm not sure I follow you... I don't quite see what you mean... ... could you repeat the question, please? 6.2.3 Making sure you understand correctly Did you say (eighteen) or (eighty)? So, what you're asking is .... Is that right? Let me just check. You said... Right? If I understand your question correctly, you are asking... Am I right? 6.2.4 The difficult questions Interesting question, what do the others think? point ... anybody else any views on the subject? No? well, maybe we can move on to another point... ... anybody else any views on the subject? Yes? Great, what do you think?, it sounds like you already have an opinion? , what's your view? , maybe you'd like to share your opinion with the others I can't say I agree with you, but I take your point. I'm not sure that all would agree with you... 7. Figurative language Images and analogies: try and include one fresh, striking image (not a cliche) within your opening remarks: - "This sculpture is very much like (the layers of an onion)..." It’s a bit like ... It’s similar to (what you have in Britain) Link to your audience’s world - "The fact that we are here on (St. George's Day) is perhaps appropriate..." - "If we compare the situation then to ... perhaps we can understand it more clearly .." - "At some time in our lives we've all had the experience of..." - "This gesture in the painting reminds me of that familiar moment when you..." - "Let's take a example from a recent decision in your country to..." - "Maybe you are also used to this problem " - "I believe you are aware of ..... - in particular ..." Interaction (apart from eye contact, key/tone changes, etc.) Rhetorical questions - "So, what should we make of this? Well, the experts suggests that the solution lies in looking at the sculpture from a different standpoint, and I'm now going to show you how." - "What was the biggest challenge facing the Catholic church at that time? [pause] Lack of financing? [pause] Corruption? [pause] I admit they were all important but I think the biggest problem facing the Church then (as now) was..." 8. Illustrating points with pictures 8.1 Introducing I'd like to show you this photograph If I can draw your attention to this (part of the column) My point is illustrated in this diagram Let's look for a moment at this .... which illustrates my point 8.2 Describing main features It's a plan/drawing/idealised representation showing the.... The left hand shows shaded area indicates/represents You will notice that... An interesting feature is... You can see an interesting point here. 8.3 Interpreting What this suggests is...
