Coco Chanel Childhood and youth ❖ Gabrielle Coco Chanel was born is Saumur (France) on 19 August 1883 ❖ After the death of her mother, she spent most of her childhood in an orphanage ❖ After the orphanage, Coco was sent to a school of domestic arts ❖ After turning 18 she began working as saleswoman and she performed as a singer at a cafe-concert ❖ She met her first lover, Étienne de Balsan, who was fundamental for the beginning of her career The death of Arthur Capel ❖ In 1919 he died in a car accident ❖ Chanel said “Either I die as well. Or I finish what we started together.” ❖ She wasn’t allowed to mourn officially because she wasn’t married to Arthur Capel ❖ She began wearing black and then started experimenting with black cloth Chanel N°5 ❖ Chanel became famous for creating and selling her own perfume ❖ She chose the sample N° 5 because she always used to launch her collection on the 5th day of the 5th months, so she thought that number 5 brought her luck ❖ According to Chanel’s indication, the perfume had to express a concept of timeless, unique and fascinating femininity ❖ The perfume is famous for its essencial structure and the cap cut like and emerald ❖ Chanel N°5 is still the best-selling perfume in the world The little black dress ❖ By the early 20s the world almost ended up fighting for gender equality ❖ Women had rights, but they lost their face, because fashion was going through a situation where clothing began to lose its sexiness and sophistication ❖ Chanel got this point and successfully managed to combine details with revolutionary innovations and defiant femininity ❖ She invent the famous “little black dress” Chanel’s leadership skills ❖ Great creative leadership: she was capable of creating products that were attractive and desired ❖ She was able to use her leadership skills to break through the men barrier in women’s fashion ❖ Chanel had an eye for what women wanted "There are too many men in this business, and they don't know how to make clothes for women. All this fantastic pinching and puffing. How can a woman wear a dress that's cut so she can't lift up her arm to pick up a telephone?" - Coco Chanel –Coco Chanel “A girl should be two things: who and what she wants.”
