Coco Chanel Childhood and youth ❖ Gabrielle Coco Chanel was born is Saumur (France) on 19 August 1883 ❖ After the death of her mother, she spent most of her childhood in an orphanage ❖ After the orphanage, Coco was sent to a school of domestic arts ❖ After turning 18 she began working as saleswoman and she performed as a singer at a cafe-concert ❖ She met her first lover, Étienne de Balsan, who was fundamental for the beginning of her career The death of Arthur Capel ❖ In 1919 he died in a car accident ❖ Chanel said “Either I die as well.
