ROMEO AND JULIET Introduction Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s best known works, which has spawned hundreds of adaptations in the four hundred years since it was first written. It is the tragic story of the doomed love affair between two teenagers from two feuding Italian families: the Capulet and the Montague. Themes There are many themes explored in the play, some examples are: • Love • Hate • Death • Fate • Loyalty The theme of love Throughout the play love is a violent and drastic overpowering force that clouds the families values, loyalty and rational thought. Love examples in the play: v Love causes Romeo and Juliet to act irrationally. v It is described as a kind of magic. v It is used to make decisions. The theme of hate In the play there are two mains type of hate: • The two families hate each other and are constantly disagreeing and feuding causing many deaths and eventually their own children’s deaths. Although no one knows the reason for all this hate. • Romeo and Juliet’s love is threatened constantly by a society full of hate.
