It is the root of a political practice aimed, through discrimination and persecution, at guaranteeing the 'purity' and dominance of the 'superior race'. Racism divides people based on where we come from or the colour of our skin. And it happens when people feel that it’s okay to treat others badly as they go about their daily lives. Racism is never okay. But it still happens all over the world. Every day. Racism happens in lots of different ways. 2 0 * 2 1 In his classic study Capitalism & Slavery (1944), Eric Williams wrote: Unfree labour in the New World was brown, white, black and yellow; Catholic, Protestant and pagan. . . . Here, then, is the origin of slavery. The reason was economic, not racial; it had to do not with the colour of the worker, but with the cheapness of the work. Asserting the no-relationship of slavery to race at the beginning, has generated considerable debate, Some scholars have argued that existing racial prejudice led to slavery. Others, such as Williams, have suggested that racism was a consequence of slavery itself. (no) Slavery generated racism. No people could systematically enslave another people of a different 'race' for several hundred years without developing some form of racial animosity and prejudice. However, racism also preceded slavery and survived it. Various subtle influences had already conditioned Europeans to have a negative view of what was different from them long before they thought of enslaving them. 2 0 * 2 1 Asian community during the pandemic Many people are feeling anxious during these uncertain times as they navigate the risks associated with COVID-19 and experience the tension from physical distancing or isolation for what can seem like an eternity. But people of Asian ancestry face yet another set of challenges posed by racism and xenophobia which has soared during the COVID-19 pandemic amidst rumors and blame placed on China. Starting as early as January 2020, when most Americans were not feeling the daily effect of this pandemic as they are now, many Asian Americans were already starting to face discrimination, from people avoiding them in grocery store aisles to more violent hate crimes. This was due to the mistaken belief that they were somehow more likely to be infected because the first known COVID-19 cases were in China. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have already been almost 2,600 reported cases of anti-Asian discrimination in the U.S. between March and July 2020. Even patients are exhibiting racist attitudes towards Asian American physicians (who make up 17% of practicing physicians in the U.S.) and nurses during this pandemic. More than half of Asian Americans are worried about being subject to COVID-19-related hate crimes and discrimination. 2 0 * 2 1 A new compilation of hate crime data reveals that the increase in attacks against Asian Americans has only persisted: the research, released by the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, compared data from the first quarter of 2021 to the same time period in 2020 across 15 major cities. It found that hate crimes surged by 169 percent, continuing the "historic" increase in such attacks last year. Van C. Tran, a sociologist and associate professor at the City University of New York's Graduate Center, said crimes have increased across the board during the coronavirus pandemic, so the rise in attacks isn't necessarily surprising. However, the data are particularly concerning as they show that the targeting of Asian Americans in particular has "exploded." Another factor is the political awakening among Asian Americans during the pandemic, Tran said. While the community has long unreported hate crimes, he said, there may be more willingness to speak up now than ever before because of the activism catalyzed by the attacks. 2 0 * 2 1 On March 16, 2021, a series of mass shootings occurred at three spas or massage parlors in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Eight people were killed, six of whom were Asian women. The first shooting was reported around 5 p.m.at Young’s Asian Massage; the second shooting was reported At 5:47 p.m. at Gold Massage Spa on Piedmont Road They found three women dead from gunshot wounds. While Atlanta police were at Gold Spa, they received reports of another shooting across the street at Aromatherapy Spa, where they discovered another woman shot and killed. Two Gold Massage Spa employees survived. The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long. officials cannot confirm if the attack was racially motivated. According to the police, Long described his actions as being the result of a sex addiction that conflicted with his religious beliefs. Police have said Robert Aaron Long said he targeted massage parlors because he has a “sexual addiction” and wanted to “eliminate” places of “temptation.” 2 0 * 2 1 Following the shootings, mass protests against Asian hate have occurred in cities across the U.S. and the world On March 21, thousands participated in protests in Atlanta, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Montreal, denouncing anti-Asian sentiment. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris also expressed their concerns about any violence against asian americans. Biden said that brutality against asian americans is very troubling. Pop superstar Rihanna showed her support for the Asian American and pacific islander community by going undercover to attend a “stop asian hate” in NYC. Korean American singer-songwriter Eric Nam spoke out about Asian racism in the U.S. in an article with the title "If You're Surprised by the Anti-Asian Violence in Atlanta, You Haven't Been Listening. It's Time to Hear Our Voices," he stressed the message of "Stop Asian hate" "While prosecutors and law enforcement still debate whether to designate the murders as hate crimes," he said, "millions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), including myself, are left feeling abandoned and overwhelmed with memories of our past, the realities of our present and fears for our collective future in a country we love." "Please hear us now because being silent now is being complicit," he said. "We must all continue to be active in creating the change that we so badly want and need for ourselves and our future generations." 2 0 * 2 1 ANTI-SIKH HATE CRIMES On 15 April 2021, a shooting occurred at a FedEx facility in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, in which 9 people plus the gunman were killed. At least 100 employees were present at the time of the shooting. The gunman was the 19-year-old white supremacist Brandon Hole, a former employee of the facility, who armed with a rifle arrived at the FedEx parking lot began shooting at employees. Afterwards, Hole began advancing toward the entrance, where he began shooting again. The shooting lasted less than four minutes, and all of the people inside the building were unable to call for help because of the company's no-phone policy. When police arrived, they found Hole, who died by suicide, inside the building with 2 rifles. Police have identified the victims and their ages range from 19 to 74. Four of the eight victims were part of the Sikh community, originally from northwest India. An estimated 10,000 Sikhs live in Indiana, and all have said they are traumatized by all the attacks towards their community endures. Since the September 11, 2001 attack, Sikhs face daily discrimination because many times they are confused with Muslims because they wear turbans and their hair and beards are uncut.
