Parasite (기기기) of Bong Joon-Ho Review: This movie is one of my recent discoveries during last year’s quarantine. A wonderful film and, despite many other big jewels of Joon-Ho's career, such as The Host or Snowpiercer, this really seems to be the best. Bong Joon- Ho has been able to enclose, in little more than two hours, more than three different genres. It changes from comedy, to drama, then to horror, in a few minutes. You start with a warm and safe feeling and a few laughs, and then find yourself outside your comfort zone. It leaves you with some pretty creepy thoughts. _Described by its creator as "a comedy without clown, a tragedy without evils", Parasite is the picture of two households belonging to opposite ends of the South Korean society’s socioeconomic spectrum. It tells the story of a family of unemployed that, by pure chance, finds a way to comes into contact with a wealthier family. _The characters we follow were smartly portrayed. The humbler family, which could be often stereotyped as ignorant, is here extremely intelligent and determined. The wealthiest one, however, is not presented as a nest of complete idiots and not even as bad people, rather naive. They don’t do anything to get hated, but trough the members of this less-fortunate family, even the viewer will understand that it is not gold all that glitters. Their actions are so intense, that you don’t necessarily have to justify them, but what they do make sense because you took this trip with them. You get to the point where you no longer know who is the victim and who is the culprit. _The actors did such a wonderful job, skillfully involving the viewer, slowly dragging him in the story. They took their characters wisely, while bringing what was in Joon-Ho's mind to great results. It makes you realize some things just need to be ambiguous. You do not need to be explained everything: just look at their face, the expressions that they make to perceive how something makes them feel, explaining what is hidden behind their actions. _Brilliant is that, much of this contrast is revealed through visual elements: emblematic is the sequence in which people of a certain area watch a rain storm through a large window; while others, after walking in the rain to return home, must empty their water flooded rooms instead. They are incredible images that are reproduced on the screen with a breathtaking cinematography. The locations are therefore sharply used as a border, a separator between two worlds: you pass from a dirty and fuzzy basement to an impeccable and sharp villa. _Soon comes a point in the film where everything changes: it begins to become less fun and much more serious. It makes you find out the message in a shocking way. That’s what really caught me. Portrayed with mastery, the things that are happening are starting to be clear and scary. At some point even the most macabre scene seems plausible. You watch the movie, and you just can’t deny the possibility of something like this happening, which is why it looks a lot scarier. With a pure sense of humanity, it becomes the perfect mirror to finely criticize the result of a capitalist society. It seems almost like a social satire, slapping your face with a reality too often hidden. Parasite is, in its unique confusion and intensity, a beautiful film full of metaphors. I loved every minute of it like a breath of fresh air. It is definitely recommended to everyone who is looking for something uncommon yet artistic. One of the best releases of the year 2019. It really deserves the recognition it received. “The best plan in life is to never plan.” - Parasite Aurora Fortunati 3B RIM
