RESTAURATION SUMMARY - 16/9 - (vedi powerpoint prof) The restoration period is divided in 2 parts: It was a period of scientific thought. The ability to think was given a lot of importance. We can divide this age in two periods. The first half (1700-1750) is called Augustan age or Neoclassical age. English writers imitated Roman writers who were in Augustus' reign. The second half (1750-1798) was called the pre-Romantic age. This period was influenced by the Industrial Revolution, American Revolution and the French Revolution. Historical background: 1. There was 2 political parties: whigs and tories 2. Political Acts: in 1707 there was an Act of Union in which Scotland merged with England, forming Great Britain. 3. In 1736, a Licensing Act passed to control the theater. Writers started to write novels. 4. In 1798 Ireland was included in Great Britain. 5. Scientific discoveries brought people to change their opinion about religion. Literary features: 1. Prose flourished: it was the age of reason. 2. The rise of novels: writers started to talk about real facts, event and places. 3. Political writings became very important. 4. The spread of coee houses where women talked about novels, political facts and scientific discoveries. Women become important, they participate in diabetes, they talk about, political.. 5. Periodical writings (newspapers): “The spectator”,“The Titler” The satires: writers wrote the satire to attack aristocratic classes. Dictionary: Samuel Johnson published The Dictionary of English Language in 1755. Important monarch: CHARLS 1: he excluded military of the parliament QUEEN ANN: unify english and scottish parliament→ great britain GEORGE FIRST: he was german, he doesn't know anything about english, so he get a prime minister→ now England become a PARLIAMENTARY MONARCHY GEORGE SECOND: war of succession and 7 years war PARLIAMENT: divided in tories (from middle class) and wigs (from first class and also the church) SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES people change his mind→ first they believe in magic and other things now science
