Singles interrogation during the modernism, which is a cultural movement and indicates a reaction against the 19 century ideas conventions, two generation of modernist writers developed. These writers were influenced by various iconoclastic movements such as cubism, dad isms, futurism and they also were trying to create their own interpretation of reality. The had also an anthropological interest and were influenced by Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud (the idea of unconscious and that human mind had many layers). Eliot, Joyce, and Woolf compose the first generation. They deal with the unconscious in daily life, and they used the stream of consciousness technique, they describe the inner fuss of thought. The second generation is composed by Orwell, and all the writer that deals with policy and social problems, instead of the unconscious. Also, they are often call the “oxford poets because they were all students from oxford or also the progressive poets. They preferred more traditional form. I want to talk about the first generation of w. Some characterise of the first modernist writers are the breakdown of the division of time, the use of myth and a complex language. And the use of the stream of consciousness technique. This technique is characterised by short, compressed sentence, word with no rational order, the description of an event interrupted by side comments, all expedient that indicates the fuss of thoughts. James Joyce is one of the first g. Of modernist. He wrote dub liners, Ulysses and the central theme is the paralysis, which means the inability to act, to react. Also, another important feature is the moment of awareness, also called epiphany. One of his most important works is dub liners. Dublin will be always present in his work. Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short stories. In this works there is the paralysis that correspondent to life in Dublin, and it is present in four distinct stages: childhood, youth, maturity, and public life. Eveline is a story about a young woman that is watching the world out the window (symbolise that she is not living). She wants to escape from Dublin, with frank, her youth kind lover, but in the end she does not’ have the courage to do this. And she is sating immobile like she is paralysed. The organ player is the symbol of epiphany. The dead is the climax to all the other stories. Is a story about Gabriel, successful journalism that represent all failed dub liners, and his wife Gretta? After a party, they are in their hotel, and Gretta started crying for a boy she used know. And Gabriel in this moment became awareness of his wife feeling. Ulysses is an example of the reworking of myth. This opera tells the story of a day, in the life of tree characters: bloom they represent the Ulysses Dedalus, a sensitive young man and molly bloom, Leopold's wife that correspond to Penelope, but she is unfaithful to her husband. Ulysses is seen as an average person, an antihero. At the end of the novel, there is the monologue, symbol of the stream of consciousness technique. It is molly monologue, and there are free association, memories, the use of the world yes and there is no punctuation. She is remembered the moment of the proposal.
