The name post-postmodernism is pure abstraction: this “literary period” is still developing and academics do not agree on how to call it, some of them even think we are still in the postmodernist age. It has been developing roughly since the 1990’s. Some features typical of postmodernism are still present, especially the strong references to popular culture. FICTION: Hanif Kureishi Hilary Mantel John Banville David Mitchell Irvine Welsh Colm Tóibín Zadie Smith Ali Smith Mark Haddon HISTORY Postmodernists thought that history had stopped. Now a few historical events changed this sense of stasis during post-postmodernism (the fall of the USSR; 9/11; wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; global crisis of 2008, etc.) & contemporary thinkers and writers think that history is still changing our world. Historical novels: Postmodernism Post-postmodernism ↓ ↓ Made fun of history and Considers history as considered it a big lie the only thing that could not to be trusted in any be used to describe way our position in society The position of writers towards the possibility of describing reality through language is still quite sceptical, as it was during postmodernism. In this period, there is a rise of works trying to put together fictional aspects with nonfictional ones. Nonfiction novels: novels in which historical events are presented in an essay-like form but characters are treated as fictional people (hence, the author can read their mind and explain why they chose the way they did, something impossible for a historical essay). Autofiction: the author presents his book as an autobiography, but the narrated facts did not happen. These two ambiguous forms mainly spread in continental Europe and North America, but there are a few examples also in Britain (EX: Beryl Bainbridge’s According to Queeney [2001 – nonfiction novel]; a few of Ali Smith’s short stories [autofiction]). DIGITALIZATION The rapid growth of digital devices and of telecommunications has changed our vision of the world; This “digital” weltanschauung (vision of the world) is strongly present in literary works; Also, information technology has changed how books are written, produced and distributed; Anyway, it is still too early to understand whether these changes affected literature in a structural way also stylistically and thematically. Hanif Kureishi (1954 – living) Son of a Pakistani father and a British mother, most of his works show the problems in British society caused by clashes between different cultures; THEATRE: Alan Bennett Roddy Doyle PO TRY: Carol Ann Duffy Wen C pe Robin Robertson Don Paterson John Haynes
