MODERNISM: → HENRY JAMES : he was an author and he developed the limited point of view in modernism. In his novels he explorates the dilemmas of existence , complexity of human relations and soul. His two main novels are “The portrait of a lady” and “ The turn of the screw” → DH LAWRENCE: he was a writer and a poet , he was against formal Christianity and sexualized the biblical language , he was also influenced by Freud because of the idea of male subterranean consciousness. → VIRGINIA WOOLF : she was a writer and she was the representative of the Bloomsbury group which was a group of artists who rejected the victorian values). She believed that human personality was fragmented in impressions and emotions , she was mentally ill and depressed, died by drowning herself . Mrs Dalloway. → JOYCE :. One of the most important and influential modernist writer and literary critic, is famous for his experimental use of language and new literary methods including interior monologue ,he also developed the “epiphany” which is the manifestation of an interior truth caused by a trivial gesture , an external object or an ordinary situation. His two main works are Dubliners and Ulysses. Dubliners it’s a collection of 15 short stories which describes realist every day life of people in Dublin, in particular middle class people. Ulysses is a novel ,it’s set again in Dublin, in particular it’s about one single day and i’ts important to say that is a novel modelled on the Odyssey , the main theme is a man’s journey (not physical but interior) through life allegorically represented by Ulysses’s story and the 24 hours of the day of the protagonist correspond to the 24 books of classic epic. The narrative techniques used in the novel are stream of consciousness , cinematic technique , dramatic monologue and of course there are references to myths and legends of past associated with present. → HUXLEY : english writer and philosopher, he had different phases , he was first interested in aesthetics then he had polio-ethical commitment regarding scientific progress and negative aspects of modern civilization and also he had a predominantly religious point of view. He is known for his main novel “Brave New World” which is a dystopian social science fiction and it’s set in a future place where everyone is controlled and most people are brainwashed , there and extreme futuristic view to show how dangerous control and lack od individuality can be. This book has been frequently banned and changed since its original publication. It is written in a satiric detailed and unemotional style. → THE AUDEN CIRCLE : a group of irish and british artists, what united them was the sense of shame for not bein part of the war but writers took part in anti-fascist struggle developed from Spanish war to defend the republic , they wanted to change the society. → ORWELL : was a journalist and writer ,critic and essayist who believed in useful writing social function, he had the urge to inform and reveal facts. One of his most famous novel is “Animal Farm” in which he allegorized the rise of power of the dictator Stalin , he represented it in allegorical description via animals and portrayed the perfect totalitarian society. Another novel he wrote is “1984” in which he again the primary theme is to warn the readers about the danger of totalitarianism. It explores how such a governmental system would impact society and people who live in it. POETRY IN MODERNISM : → EZRA POUND : was an american poet and its considered the main poet of modernism because he defined modernist aesthetic in poetry. We can say that the features of it were:
