POSTMODERNISMO → DORIS LESSING : writers, her works are mainly concerned with lives of women : their psychology, sexuality , politics , work . relationships… She wrote “The golden notebook” in which she describes a fragmentation of modern society through Anna’s emotional breakdown . It contains materials and writings from different genres and literary forms and for this reason is a multi layered and complex text. → GOLDING : British writer , his way of writing was allegorical and symbolist and the theme he treated in his novel were loss, death , dark aspects of humanity , violence, power. His is famous for his best novel “Lord of the files” which tells the story of a group of young boys who find themselves alone on a deserted island. They develop rules and a system of organization, but without any adults to serve as a civilizing impulse, the children eventually become violent and brutal. → IRIS MURDROCH : she was a philosopher and writer , she was influenced by Beckett and her novels showed ethical dilemmas, some of the features can be for example freedom of characters which create their own patterns or worlds eluding human systems of control She wrote “The bell” in which she explores emotional sexual, moral tensions in the lay of religious community (the bell announces new freedom) → MURIEL SPARK : she was a writer who wrote about the commitment to moral issues and expression in fictional form. “The prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in which she argues about the exercise of psychological power in Edinburgh girls school. → JEAN RYHS: she was a british novelist, she is famous for her novel “Wild Sargasso Sea” in which she recreated Mr Rochester’s (from Jane Eyre) relationship and marriage with Bertha Mason , the novel is setted in West Indies and there is an alteration of perspective and it ends in Thornfield Hall. →ANGELA CARTER : Writer, she seeks out the psychological aspects to fairytailes, fairytailes contain topics that many choose to ignore like incest, rape and cannibalism. Shw wrote “The bloody chamber” which is a collection of ten stories. → JOHN FOWLES : he wrote “The french lieutenant's woman” , an historical novel set in 19th century . It’s the perfect example of metafiction, despite being written by a man it’s considered also a feminist work : while the male character is stereotypical , the female one fiights for her indipendence. → ANTHONY BURGESS : he was primarily a comic writer, his dystopian satire “Clockwork Orange” is hs best known novel, set in a future where criminals are scientifically forced to behave. → ANTONIA BYATT: (still living) she wrote a pastiche (it presents different types of texts like letters ,articles , diary ) “Possession” the story of two contemporary scholars investigating the love story of two 19th century poets. → IAN McEWAN: (still living)british novelist and screenwriter, he wrote “The cement Garden” a violent story of children burying their own parents and living by their own, symbolizing the isolation of children in contemporary society. → JANETTE WINTERSON : is an English writer, she is still alive , her first book “Oranges are not the only fruit” is a semi-autobiographical novel about a lesbian girl who grows up in a very religious community, and some of the facts narrated in the story really happened to her then she also wrote “ Sexing the cherry” which is a fantasy and historical novel at the same time that’s because it’s set in the 17th century. It’s strongly feminist and there are refereces to magic realism and grotesque , there are examples of intertexstuality.
