At first her works appeared in instalments and through pseudonym. She wrote with her sisters. Jane Eyre is published in 1817. It is a Bildungsroman( novel of formation). The main character is seen from childhood to adulthood. One of the main theme is the marriage. In the first stage there is the Jane’s childhood. In this period she was abused by her aunt and cousins. She was orphan like Bronte. In the second stage she went out from this house and go to study at the Lowood school where she after became a teacher. In the third stage she started to work as governess at Thornfield Hall. Here she fell in love with Mr Rochester and after many episodes they decided to get married. However at the wedding stage she finds out he’s already married but his wife was mad and because of this she was locked in the attic of the manor. Infact Jane heard some strange noises in the previous nights. In the fourth stage she decided to go away to stay with the River’s family. During this period she received a proposal by a clergyman but she reject it. In the fifth stage, after finding out that Mr Rochester’s wife has died and he has become blind, she decided to go back and the two finally can get married. There are some elements of the gothic fiction in this novel. The Castle of Otranto started the gothic fiction and in that tale there are dark atmosphere, secrets, trapdoors, hidden passages and strange noises. In Jane Eyre there is: The manor; The solitary hero; The violent mad woman; strange noises and laughs heard in the hall.
