Oliver Twist Oliver Twist is the story of a young orphan trying to survive in a society, the Victorian one, which did not protect in any way the weaker classes of the population. Oliver was born in a workhouse in the early 1800s. After the death of his mother in childbirth, Oliver Twist was brought up in an orphanage run by priests until he was 8 years old, then at the age of nine, he was sent to work in a factory where he and his young companions suffered hunger and mistreatment. Having gained a reputation as an agitator, he was dismissed from the factory and, after a stint as a chimney sweep, was sent as an apprentice to an undertaker called Sowerberry. Here, too, Oliver is treated so badly that he decides to run away to London. Almost in the city, the boy, exhausted by the journey, meets Jack Dawkins (Dodger) who offers him food and promises him accommodation. Jack Dawkins introduced him to a group of petty thieves led by the Jew Fagin and the violent Bill Sikes. However, the "heist" is unsuccessful: Oliver is wounded in the arm and is treated by Mrs Maylie herself, who is moved by the boy's confession of his misadventures. In the meantime, Fagin wants to get hold of Oilver again, and gets help from Monks, who has discovered that Oliver is his half-brother and illegitimate son of one of Mrs Maylie's sisters, and will therefore inherit an interesting fortune. However, Nancy, who is good at heart and has overheard Fagin and Monks' criminal plan, alerts Mrs Maylie and Lord Brownlow, who has returned to watch over the protagonist in the meantime. Discovered, Nancy is brutally murdered by Bill Sikes. Monks, in an attempt to eliminate any clues that might reveal Oliver's true identity and thus take away part of his inheritance, comes into possession of a locket and a ring that Oliver's mother had given to old Sally, who had assisted her when she was dying. Mr. Brownlow manages to catch Monks, on whose trail Nancy had put him; thus, the criminal plan of Fagin's gang begins to unravel: the ringleader is arrested and sentenced to be hanged, while Sikes, fleeing over the rooftops of London, is also killed. Oliver thus discovers his true identity: he is the son of a certain Agnes Fleming and Mr. Leeford and Monks is his half-brother. Moreover, Mrs Maylie is Oliver's aunt. Having received his share of his father's inheritance (which Monks squanders in America, ending his days in prison), Oliver is adopted by Mr. Brownlow, and can begin his life as a well-adjusted bourgeois in society. I haven’t read the book, but the movie was really good. But honestly I didn’t expect a story like this, that was heart-breaking at the beginning and recovering at the end. Oliver Twist is a good young boy. He is sweet and innocent of all. However, the people treat him miserable and hit and insult him just because they are mean. I really liked the end of the story, where Oliwer got what he deserved and was welcomed by Mr. Brownlow.
