By the end of Sons and Lovers Lawrence hadn't still been able to solve the Oedipal problem; with Frieda he had been able to find a woman summing up his mother but his father's figure still remaied unsolved, like the dichotomy merging vs fullfillment. In Women in love he analyses two couples Rupert a school inspector and Ursula a teacher vs Gerald a mines' manager,an industrialist and Gudrun an artist. Both Gudrun and Ursula represented the indipendent, cultured emancipated women, Lawrence's mother could have became in a more modern post war context. They choose a man not because It Is the only obliged choice for a woman, they are economically indipendent, so they do not need a marriage as a solution. The Birkin and Ursula relationship Is a Gold example of fullfillment because they undergo a process of mutual education and acceptance, finding a compromise between their idiological and personlities differences; Birkin renounces to the typical dominating man superior attitude and Ursula looses her sensitive female attidude becoming sexually and intellectually stronger; through the novel they become the perfect mixture of sex and body, instinc and intellect which can make a relationship working. Only after this process they marry and their marriage can be successfull The Gudrun-Gerald relashionship Is a total failure and the marriage Is not a solution Gerald Is described as the cold, oppressive, dominator industrialist unable to feel emotions; his attidude is controlling and dominating everything and everybody, people, objecs, nature and even animals; this attitude makes him have a descructive power over everybody surrounding him; he Is believed to be accidentally responsible for his sister's death and consequentely of his father's death, he himself dies and his death happens in the Alps, among the snow, symbol of emotional coldness and spiritual aridity. Gerald Is the symbol of iindustrilization and its devastating consequences, the setting Beldover Is a mining town as Bestwood in Sons and Lovers and Tevershall in Lady Chatterley's lover; Places peopled by dead people, spiritually and emotionally killed by the ugliness of the mechanical civilization. Now In his relation with Gudrun,Gerald wants to dominate her phisically and intellectually, Gudrun Is fascinated by Gerald’s masculinity, virility and beauty but at the same time as an artist she Is a free personality and intellectually vital, so She cannot merge into Gerald, and even Gerald cannot repress his dominating attitude, the consequence Is the failure of their marriage and their splitting up. The positive couples in Women in love Is represented by Ursula and Birkin, representing Frieda and Lawrence, an example of fullfillment but they are both intellectuals, coming From the same cultural and Social background. In this novel Lawrence doen't overcome his Oedipal problem, which he does in Lady Chatterley’s lover. Here the triangle Is represented by Clifford an industrialist, guiding the mining centre in Tevershall, a war veteran, paralyzed and obliged to a wheelchair; again disasters caused by progress and capitalism; the wheelchair Is the symbol of a physical, emotional and sexual paralysis, all connected with his sterility. Then we have his beautiful wife, Constance, an indipendent, intelligent woman Who Is againest class differences or privileges. And Mellor the gamekeeper ,vital, strong, handsom even elegant and refined The physical attraction and the powerful love story between Mellor and Connie makes this novel the redeption novel, a tribute to his father, and the possibility to find a fullfilling relation in people belonging to
