Frankenstein Part 1 Robert Walton writes to his sister Margaret. He told her that he always wanted to be an explorer, that in two weeks he will go to Archangel to hire a ship and a crew. On another letter, he told her that he found a ship and a crew but he had no friend. The voyage began and he was happy. One day, the ship was surrounded by ice so they couldn’t move. They saw a sledge pulled by dogs going north anda gigantic man drove it. Then they saw another sledge and the man on it, was weak and half- frozen. They invited him onto the ship. When he was good, he said that he was following someone. Robert couldn’t send the letter so he continued it like a journal. The man's name was Victor Frankenstein and he started to tell his story. Part 2 Victor was born in Geneva, his father was a magistrate and he had a little brother (William) and an adopted sister (Elizabeth). She lived with a poor family in Italy. She was gentle and beautiful (golden hair and blue eyes). Her parents (Italian nobleman/German lady) were both dead. Henry Clerval (his dear friend) wanted to be a poet, he loved nature and beauty. Victor was interested in science. When he was 17 years old, he went to the University at Ingolstadt but during that time Elizabeth became ill with a scarlet fever. She slowly recovered but his mother caught the illness too. Her mother died and a few weeks later he went to the university. He felt lonely and disappointed. Then he went to hear a lecture by Mr Waldman. He left the lecture and he wanted to explain the mysteries of creation. The next day he went to Mr Waldman that showed him his laboratory. Victor became interested in human body and he began to work with dead bodies. He studied the progress of their decay. After days and nights of work, he discovered how life was created. His first task was to create a new body. He explored dead bodies and he tortured living animals. AIIl summer he worked on his horrible creation. He completed his creation in November. It was one o’clock in the morning when he saw the yellow eyes of the creature open. He moved and breathed. His skin was yellow and wrinkled, his hair was long and black. Victor felt horror and disgust. He ran out of the room and he lay awake in his bedroom horrified by what he had done. He dreamt Elizabeth young and healthy but when he kissed her, she grew pale and cold. Her face changed into the face of his dead mother. He woke up and he saw the monster. He was standing beside his bed, grinned at him and stretched out his hand to touch him. Victor ran away and spent the rest of the night outside. The next morning, he walked the streets of Ingolstadt and suddenly he heard someone call him. He saw Henry Clerval that had just arrived from Geneva. He came to study at the university. They walked to his ‘apartment together and Victor asked him about his father, Elizabeth and William. Henry understood that he was ill. Victor told him he worked too much. He didn’t want Henry to see the monster, in fact when he came to his apartment Victor left him to the door. He ran upstairs but the apartment was empty and Victor fainted. Henry nursed him and one day, after several months, brought him a letter of Elizabeth where she said that they were happy and they wanted him to return home. Victor didn't return to study science but Oriental languages. When spring arrived, he found a letter of his father. Part 3 His father told him that William was dead. He was murdered when they went for a walk in Plainpalais. Elizabeth told her father that she had gave to William a necklace with a picture of his mother inside it but when they discovered the body, the necklace was gone. Victor left for Geneva and when he arrived to his town, he decided to visit the place where William died. He saw, in a flash of lightning, a gigantic figure who was the monster he created. The following morning, Elizabeth and his father told him that Justine (servant who nursed his mother) was found guilty because one servant found the necklace of William in her pocket. Victor didn't believe it. The court didn't believe her and the next day she was hanged. Victor wanted to kill the monster he had created. He escaped to the mountains. Two years after Justine's death, he entered the valley of Chamonix. When he sat on a rock to rest, he saw a man running towards him. It was the monster that told him to listen his story. Victor didn't want but the monster said that if he didn't listen to him, he would kill everyone he loved. Part 4 The monster started his story. He didn't remember very much about the beginning of his life. When he left the apartment, he went to the forest of Ingolstadt. He drank from the river and ate some berries. One day he decided to left the forest. He saw a small hut and inside there was a man who ran out when he saw the monster. The following day he arrived at a village and when he entered a cottage, some villagers attacked him. He escaped to the open country and he found a place to hide. He saw a young woman with a young man entered into their cottage. The hut shared one wall with their cottage and the monster started to look them. He learned some words like milk, fire, food and wood. He learned also the people's name (Agatha, Felix and father). There were some words that he didn't understand like unhappy and good. He spent the winter listening to them and learning. One day in spring one woman arrived to the cottage. She was Arabian (Safie) and she didn't talk cottager's language. Felix started to teach her their language and the monster started to learn it too. He learned about Romans, Greeks, Roman Empire and the discovery of America. He realized that he was alone in the world. Part 5 The old man’s name was De Lacey (good family). Safie's father was a Turkish merchant. He was put in prison and Felix decided to help him to escape. The Turk offered money but Felix refused (he fell in love with Safie). On the day of the escape, Agatha and his father left their house to hid in a part of Paris. Felix, left Paris with Safie and the Turk. They travelled through Italy. The Turk wanted to return to Turkey and promised Safie and Felix that they would be married. Felix had to return to Paris and the Turk said that Safie would stay in a convent in Leghorn. The Turk ordered Safie to follow him to Turkey but when they argued, she sold her jewels and travelled with a servant to Germany to find Felix. One night in August, the monster found in the woods a bag full of books (Paradise Lost, Plutarch's Lives, The Sorrow of Werther). He read all of it and he thought that he was very similar to Satan because everyone hates him. He also found Victor's journal and he read it. One day, he decided to enter the cottage when the old man was alone (he was blind). He talked with him until Felix, Agatha and Safie entered the cottage. Agatha fainted, Safie ran out and Felix attacked him. The monster ran outside into the forest. When he returned, he set fire to the cottage and decided to go to Geneva to find Victor. During his journey, he saw a woman fell into a river. He jumped into the river to save her and when he carried her onto the river bank, sha fainted. Then a man appeared, he took the woman from his arms and he ran into the forest. The monster followed him but when the man saw him, he shot the monster with a gun. After some days, he continued his journey. He saw a child (William) and he thought that he wasn't afraid of him because he was younger. When he saw his face, he screamed and the monster to silence him, put his hands around his throat and he took the necklace. Then, he left the place where he murdered the child and he went to a farm. There he saw a girl asleep, he put the necklace on her clothes and ran away. After a few days, he came to the mountains because he was alone. At the end he asked Victor to create a female of his own kind. Part 6 Victor didn’t want to create another monster so he said no. The creature said him that if he agreed, he would go with his wife to the forest of South America. Victor accepted. When he returned to Geneva, he didn't begin his work. His father told him that he had to marry Elizabeth but instead of doing it, he went to England with Clerval. They spent some months in London and Clerval wanted to visit India. Victor began to collect the materials for his creation. After some months, they received one letter from a person who lived in Scotland. They left London and stayed in Oxford, Matlock, Cumberland, Westmorland and at the end they arrived in Scotland. Victor left Henry and went to the Orkney Islands. There he started work and when the creature was half
