The Victorian age  The Victorian Compromise: the intellectuals embracing this phase aimed to instruct and entertain their readers without bitterly criticising the world they belonged to.  The Anti-Victorian reaction: the intellectuals belonging to this phase exposed all of the contradictions of the era. They were influenced by the birth of Realism and by the spread of Charles Darwin’s revolutionary theory of “natural selection”. Realistic writhers were deeply influenced by the philosophical theories referred to as Positivism. The Age of fictions The reason why the novel became the leading literary genre of the Victorian Age can be summarised: 1. There was a considerable increase in the number of people who could read and buy books 2. People could borrow books from libraries 3. Novels were easily portable objects 4. Novels were often published in instalments in newspapers: the episodic quality of their structure made novels extremely popular and engaging From a stylistic and thematic point of view, almost all Victorian novels are characterised by a series of common features: 5. Victorian novels tend to satisfy the needs of their readers who want to be entrained, included and confronted with complex but not embarrassing issues 6. Novels clear moral aim 7. Novels represent human conditions on a realistic way 8. Plots are adventurous and rich in characters, unexpected events, surprises and subplots 9. Stories are usually told by a 3rd person omniscient narrator, who is the spokesperson of the author 10. Novels are usually structured in three volumes Early Victorian Novelists The first phase of the Victorian literature included the works of writers who prose to represent the society in which they lived in a realistic way. Many of the authors were conscious of the contradiction of the Victorian moral values and society but never criticised them. This ambivalent attitude is exactly what stands at the core of the Victorian Compromise. 11. Charles Dickens  Oliver Twist His masterpiece and other books have a tragicomic tone, denounce the evils of the Victorian world using a comic tone, and generally have a happy ending. 12. Emily Bronte  Wuthering Heights 13. Charlotte Bronte  Jane Eyre These two novels represented and alternative to the triumph of mainstream Victorian novels: rather than focusing on social issues, the works of the Bronte sisters explored the world of passion and feelings.
