FIRST PART => The protagonist is Winston Smith (Smith= everyman; Winston= Churchill, because they think people have to do anything for their nation, “blood, sweat, tears”= alienated), a middle-aged unhealthy man (39 years old) he is always in pain because of a ulcer on his ankle. He works for the Ministry of Truth (Party’s propaganda), he rewrites all newspaper articles to make information coincide with the party’s current decisions. W. lives at the 7" floor of a run-down building with no electricity. Winston’s apartment is presented as a box, prison (dehumanising way of living according to the British frame of mind). In Winston’s apartment, as everywhere else, there is a telescreen and Winston is forced to repress every feeling and instinct and to maintain self- control at any cost. (tired). 1984 is the description of Winston downfall, which begins when he decides to write a diary, taking advantage of the corner in his apartment which escapes the TV control. He wants to fixed his memory about the past before the party, before it is too late. He writes: “Down with Big Brother”. Winston decides to rebel against the impersonality and inhumanity of the society of Oceania. He is doomed to fail from the very beginning [rebelliousness and fatalism]. He commits his first THOUGHT CRIME (to have the wrong thought about the party). PRESENTATION OF THE SITUATION SECOND PART => Then he falls in love with the “dark-haired girl”, Julia, a member of the junior anti sex league who works in the Ministry of Truth as well, in the Pornosec and they get engaged; she hates the party and wants to rebel as much as Winston but she is basically selfish and seeks personal pleasure in the present. They rent a room over Mr. Charrington’s junk shop/second-hand store (diary, paperweight) to make sex. O'Brien, an enigmatic powerful member of the Inner party, an operative of the Ministry of Love, makes them believe to be instead a follower of Emmanuel Goldstein, the head of the Brotherhood, and gives Winston the Book (Theory and practice of oligarchical collectivism) to read, in which the principles of the rebellious association are written. Winston trusts O’Brian even if he is not sure O’Brian is a friend or an enemy. O’Brian acts according to Winston’s idea of him, actually he is simply setting Winston up fora fall.
