His father was imprisoned for debts and he was forced to start to work in a factory. His most important work is “Oliver Twist”. Oliver Twist Childhood in the Victorian Age was a cruel experience because a lot of children were obliged to work in factories and mines. Dickens was obsessed with children, whom he presented as innocent or corrupted by adults. The most important setting of the novel is London where there are three social levels: • the parochial world whose inhabitants are insensible to the feelings of the poor • the criminal world whose inhabitants are pickpockets and murderers • the world of Victorian middle classe whose inhabitants believed in the principle of human dignity Dickens attacked the social evils of his time, such as poor houses. With the rise in the level of poverty, workhouses spread all over Europe to give relief to the poor, but the conditions in the workhouses were appalling: families were separated and rations of food and clothes were small. The story: The novel Oliver Twist reflects the economic humiliation Dickens experienced as a child.
