Emily Dickinson Was born in Massachusetts in 1830. Her poems are characterized by extreme economy of expression and linguistic compression, her language is concrete, and often refers to the natural world to convey abstract meanings. She made frequent use of unconventional lexis and syntax to convey personal experience, and of paradox and unusual metaphors to surprise the reader, leading him/her to the discovery of unexpected meanings. She uses a lot of dashes that often substitute commas and full stops, and were used to emphasize meaning. Most of her poems are short lyrics written in quatrains that make frequent use of imperfect rhymes (a type of rhyme formed by words with similar but not identical sound) or assonance. Death, the afterlife and eternity are recurring themes in his poetry which is influenced by transcendentalism which sought meaning in nature, in fact, the search for personal and universal meaning in the natural world was the other great theme which permeated his poetry. To Make a Prairie This is a very short poem. She uses simple words that have many deep meanings. This poem full of symbols is a hymn to young people to test themselves and believe in what they do and how much imagination has power. Hope is the Thing This wonderful poem by Emily Dickinson illustrates hope, describing it to us with the metaphor of the little bird. Hope sings for us and she never stops doing so. Furthermore, she is an extremely powerful and resilient creature. This is to underline to all of us that hope can and must resist in the most extreme and most suffering situations. And the ending, very beautiful, tells us that hope gives a lot and asks for nothing in returnThrough the metaphor of the bird, the poet tells us that it is a very powerful precious asset, resistant to adversity and which does not involve any kind of price to pay.
