FRANKENSTEIN Publication 1818/1819—>Frankenstein is published anonymously. 1823—>Frankenstein is published not anonymously because Mary Godwin is getting married and therefore had been given permission. Themes We can find two themes. 1) Life Vs Death—> Life is represented by Victor Frankenstein and death is represented by Frankenstein's monster. Everyone thinks it's society's fault that Frankenstein becomes a monster, so ugly awful, horrible… 2) Challenge—> Frankenstein challenges society and science creating the monster. Frankenstein compares himself to god because not being a woman, he can’t give birth. He overestimates himself, he is overreacher. We can also find challenges in other poems: -In Ancient Greece there was a man that stole the fire from gods and goddesses: Prometheus challenges Gods. -In "The rime of an ancient mariner" by Coleridge, the mariner challenges gods because he kills an albatross. Style and narrators There are three narrators so three points of view. 1) Walton—>writes epistolary novel to his sister M.S. Margaret Shelley, the only listener of the story. But first everyone thought that M.S. was Mary Shelley and not Margaret. 2) Victor Frankenstein 3) Frankenstein (the monster) 1 chapter In the first part we have the introduction where Walton leaves on a ship for the north pole. But when the ship breaks down he meets Victor Frankenstein whom he hosts on the ship. 2 chapter The second chapter begins with the introduction of Frankenstein, he says he has a brother William, and an adoptive sister Elizabeth. When his mother dies of an illness, he leaves for university where he meets a chemistry professor who explains how the human body works. Take part with him in a project for which he creates a horrible and scary man. One day he had a bad dream and ran away from the house where there was also the monster. 3-4-5 chapter Bad news arrives for Victor Frankenstein: his brother is dead and according to Victor the monster killed him and wants to take revenge. He meets him in the Alps but the monster wants to tell him why he has become bad ... it is the fault of the people who did not accept him because he was ugly. He starts spying on a family and decides to be seen by them hoping that this family can help him but they got scared too and threw him out. 6 chapter Victor and the monster make a deal: the monster will no longer torment Victor's family if he creates another female monster. Victor accepts, but later realizes it's not the right thing to do. 7 chapter Victor is imprisoned for killing a person even though it wasn't his fault. Victor later marries Elizabeth but on the night of her wedding Elizabeth is killed and shortly thereafter Victor's father. He decides to kill the monster. 8 chapter Victor has told the whole story to Walton and he is telling it to M.S. The book ends with Victor's death from an illness and the monster's repentance.
