The most common form on today is a gas electric mix, but it could be diesel electric, gas hydraulic or diesel. TWO TYPES OF GAS AND ELECTRIC HYBRID VEHICLE TYPES. Two fundamental types of hybrids are a series hybrid and a parallel hybrid. 1. In a series hybrid everything is in series, so we have the fuel which powers our engine, our engine powers a generator that generate power which is then used to power the motor which will drive the wheels (ruote) or to charge battery and the battery can also send its power to the motor to turn the wheels. 2. The other type of hybrid car is parallel and this means that both power sources can directly power the wheels so, on one side we find a battery that charges the motor, the motor goes to the transmission since it’s part of the transmission and then from the transmission you can send your power to the wheels. On the other side, we have the fuel, which powers your engine, and your engine also power this transmission and then that transmission sends the power to the wheels. So the motor in the engine are actually linked through the transmission so they both send power to it and then the power goes out to the wheels. WHY DO YOU HAVE HYBRID CARS GET BETTER FUEL ECONOMY? (Perché le auto ibride hanno un risparmio di carburante migliore?)  Regenerative breaking: as you are slowing down you are taking back some of that energy to use later.  Using electric motor plus an IC engine or internal combustion engine that allows for you to use a smaller engine and so that smaller engine you can use a more efficient engine and less fuel since you are going to use electric power and electric motors are far more efficient than internal combustion engines.  With the series hybrid cars when an engine powering a generator and it is not directly linked to the wheels means you can spin that engine at any rpm you want so you can leave it at a set efficient speed rather than having it go through a rev range when there’s inefficiencies like in a standard internal combustion engine powered cars.  There’s the auto engine shut off so when you come to a stop you kill the engine and to start accelerating you can just use the battery, send that to the motor then accelerate then turn your engine and regenerate power and generate more power so you can continue on to higher speeds.
