OLIVER TWIST We can say that Oliver Twist’s childhood is stolen because he was born into a life of poverty and misfortune in a workhouse. He is an orphan and he is on his own from the start. Even though he’s supposed to be looked after by the parish authorities, no one takes care of him. The parish authorities decide to send him to a branch- workhouse managed by Mrs Mann and Mr Bumble, where other children suffer hunger. He’s sent from one scene of cruelty and oppression to the next. Oliver doesn’t live a normal childhood, because he has no family and no friends, moreover he works instead of playing. Even when he decides to run away, his situation doesn’t improve, because he is arrested as a thief. So Oliver is still forced to work, in this case to rob, by evil men, such as Dodger and Fagin. Oliver becomes a sort of pickpocket, but Mr. Brownlow sees him in a better way. He realizes that Oliver looks too sweet and innocent to be a pickpocket. So Mr. Brownlow takes Oliver home and looks after him until he’s well. Unfortunately Fagin, the Dodger, Nancy and Bill Sikes are worried that Oliver will rat them out to the police, so they keep a watch on Brownlow’s house. One day, when Brownlow entrusts Oliver with some money and an errand to run in the city, Fagin and the criminals kidnap the poor kid once again. Nancy feels guilty and steps in to defend Oliver when Fagin tries to smack him around. Oliver is forced to participate in the attempted robbery of the Maylies’ house, and goes to wake up the household to warn them. After the Maylies have taken Oliver in and he’s been reunited with Mr. Brownlow, Nancy tells Rose what she overheard between Fagin and Monks. Oliver’s been the victim of a conspiracy, and Monks is behind it all. After Nancy overhears the second conversation between Monks and Fagin, she reports back to Mr. Brownlow and Rose. She gives them enough information to be able to find Monks. Mr. Brownlow forces Monks to tell all. Finally we get close to the happy end: Nancy gets murdered by Sikes who accidentally hangs himself; Rose gets to marry Harry Maylie. Fagin is arrested and hanged, and the rest of his gang is arrested and transported. The most important thing is that Monks’s confession enables Oliver to inherit a bit of his father’s estate. Moreover, knowing that Oliver is the son of his dead best friend, Mr. Brownlow decides to adopt him. He is kind, a loyal friend and he represents solidarity, and the escape from the afflictions to Oliver. All of the good characters move to a little village in the country, where they all live happily ever after. The meaning is that at the end, the good characters get what they want and that solidarity can improve everybody’s life.
