Oliver Twist Chapter 1 It’s a short first chapter, the scene is a small town in England, and the novel opens in the early nineteenth century .Oliver is born in a workhouse in a town called Mudfog , and is described as a "new burden upon the parish"After kissing Oliver with "cold white lips," Oliver’s mother dies, leaving her son all alone and at the mercy of the parish authorities. All we learn about his mother at this point is that she was found lying in the street after having walked a long way, but nobody knows where she’d come from, she wasn’t wearing a wedding ring, so the doctor assumes that she was unmarried and that Oliver is illegitimate. Chapter 2 After the incident that happened to Oliver while he was in the work house and after being locked up in a dark room all alone, Mr. Bumble handed the boy over to Mr. Sowerberry as his new boy who was supposed to work for him. Firstly Mrs. Sowerberry complained that Oliver was very small but was later convinced by Mr. Bumble that children grow! The first night at Mr. Sowerberry’s house was terrible, Oliver ate the dog’s food and slept where they usually work. He was alone in a strange place without anyone to call his parents or friends. The next morning he opened opened the door due to the noise coming from the outside door. He saw a big boy with small eyes and a red nose; his name was Noah who introduced himself as the manager of the place (meaning Oliver’s got to work under him and do all what he says). Noah ordered him to quickly open the windows. He was Oliver’s enemy and was jealous of him, he usually pulls his hair. They attended to many funerale and Oliver became a mourner who puts on black hat and coat or dark jacket. One day Noah said terrible things about Oliver’s mother and Oliver’s face went red with anger, he beat him not minding the fact that Noah was older and bigger that him. Mrs. Sowerberry and a servant came to the kitchen because the heard Noah shout and instead os separatine both fighters the womwn joined Noah and with the help of the servant too they all beat Oliver. When Mr. Bumble arrived to the workshop he told the woman that the cause of all was because she gives him too much meat (dog’s meat of corse). When Mr. Sowerberry came back from work that same night he flogged Oliver with a strong cane. Oliver fell on his knees and cried all night and the next morning he took his belongings in a handkerchief and quietly left for London. Chapter 3 In the parish, Oliver has been flogged and then locked in a dark room as a public example. Mr. Gamfield, a brutish chimney sweep, offers to take Oliver on as an apprentice. Because several boys have died under his supervision, the board considers five pounds too large a reward, and they settle on just over three pounds. Mr. Bumble, Mr. Gamfield, and Oliver appear before a magistrate to seal the bargain. At the last minute, the magistrate notices Oliver’s pale, alarmed face. He asks the boy why he looks so terrified. Oliver falls on his knees and begs that he be locked in a room, beaten, killed, or any other punishment besides being apprenticed to Mr. Gamfield. The magistrate refuses to approve the apprenticeship, and the workhouse authorities again advertise Oliver’s availability. Chapter 4 Oliver is now eleven years old. The board considers sending him to sea to some unhealthy port, where he would either be flogged or bludgeoned to death by the ship’s skipper. Mr. Bumble goes to inquire if there are any cabin boy positions. Upon returning, he meets Mr. Sowerberry, who has come to measure two corpses for caskets. Mr. Bumble remarks that the undertaker will make good money, but Mr. Sowerberry claims the board only permits him so much. The coffins are smaller since the people are gaunt, but the wood and handles are still expensive. Monks takes the items from Mrs Bumble and drops them through a trapdoor into the river below; he believes he has taken a significant step towards keeping Oliver's identity a secret. Fagin comes to visit Sikes and Nancy returns to Fagin's den with him to collect some money. Monks is waiting for Fagin there and the two men go upstairs, not thinking that Nancy silently follows behind them. Nancy listens to the conversation and learns more of the relationship between Monks and Oliver - including the revelation that Oliver is Monks's younger brother. Nancy is horrified by what she has heard but is unsure what to do. Having drugged Sikes with a sleeping draught she goes to the hotel in central London where she knows the Maylies to be staying. She speaks with Rose and passes on all the information she has learned, then Rose tries to persuade Nancy to give up all further contact with Sikes and Fagin, but Nancy says she must return to them. They agree that future contact will happen on Sunday evenings when Nancy will walk upon London Bridge between 11 and midnight. Chapter 8 Rose is wondering what course of action to take and whether to call upon Harry when Oliver walk in with the news that he has seen Mr Brownlow. Rose and Oliver travel to Mr Brownlow's house and she tells him all that has happened. That night Mr Brownlow comes to visit at the hotel. He and Dr. Losberne discuss the best means by which to proceed with Nancy in order to capture Monks. The location changes to the home of Sikes and Nancy. It’s 11.30 on Sunday evening and Nancy is agitated because she has been unable to make her planned walk to London Bridge to speak with Brownlow and Rose. Fagin makes a visit and having noted Nancy's state wonders whether she may have tired of Sikes's brutality and wish to be rid of him - something that would suit Fagin also. The following Sunday evening Noah,(Oliver's colleague at Mr Sowerberry's)follows Nancy to London Bridge late in the evening and hides while she meets with Brownlow and Rose. Chapter 9 Mr Brownlow and Rose meet with Nancy on London Bridge but Nancy has been followed by Noah, who listens everything she says. Nancy gives a description of Monks and tells them where to find him at the Three Cripples pub. Noah returns to Fagin's den and passes on what he has discovered. Fagin spends a long night contemplating the failure of his plans and the danger he and the gang are in. When Sikes visits Fagin passes on the details of Nancy's actions - including the fact that her first visit to London Bridge was only made possible after Nancy had given Sikes a sleeping draught. Sikes is enraged and goes home to extract vengeance, he puts to Nancy what he has learnt from Fagin. Nancy pleads for mercy - saying that she has not acted against anyone but Monks , but Sikes is not interested. He kills her with a blow to the head. Sikes goes on the run but by the following morning news of Nancy's murder is already spreading, he decides he has no option but to return to London. Mr Brownlow now has the information he needs to apprehend Monks which he subsequently arranges. Monks is brought to Mr Brownlow's house where he begins to reveal what he knows of the plot to disinherit Oliver, including his own connection to the story of Monks and his family. Chapter 10 The story picks up where it left off at the end of the previous episode - with Mr Brownlow revealing to the captive Monks that he is fully aware of the plot to use Fagin to disinherit Oliver. When Brownlow has finished, Monks is forced to acknowledge his guilt. Dr Losberne enters with news that Sikes will soon be captured. The scene changes to an old building beside the River Thames. An angry crowd has caught up with Sikes and is trying to catch him, while he tries to escape across the rooftops and he has a rope and intends to let himself down to the river but at the critical moment he is haunted by Nancy's eyes again, and loses his footing, Two days later Oliver and his new friends make their way to the town of Oliver's birth. In the evening Mr Brownlow joins them at their hotel and then produces Monks and the revelation that Monks is Oliver's half brother. The full circumstances of Oliver's birth are revealed...and of the plot by which Monks hoped to deny Oliver his birthright. At the end Oliver also discovers that Rose is his aunt. The location changes to the prison where Fagin , sentenced by hanging , is spending his last days. Oliver visits with Mr Brownlow and asks Fagin to say a prayer with him. The story comes to an end and we learn the fate of the characters: Oliver , adopted by Mr Brownlow and his new friends living happily in the country; Harry and Rose are married; Charley Bates a merry farmer; Monks dying penniless in a foreign prison; Mr and Mrs Bumble inmates of the very workhouse they once presided over.
