Frankenstein TITLE: Frankenstein AUTHOR: Mary Shelley KIND OF BOOK: Novel (romanzo) SUBGENRES: Horror, Sci-fi, Ghotic Frankenstein by Mary Shelley CHARACTERS: -Victor Frankenstein: He's the main character of the entire plot. He's passionate about scientific disciplines that help him to realize his project, the creation of a clever and strong creature. He's determined, selfish, and, sometimes, unconscious. Víctor’s life story is at the heart of Frankenstein. Victor changes over the course of the novel from an innocent youth fascinated by the prospects of science into a disillusioned man, which is oppressed by guilt feelings and determined to destroy his hideous creation. Because of his desire to obtain the godlike power of creating new life, Victor lacks of humanity and lost every connection with his family and with the world around him. With its multiple narrators and multiple perspectives, the novel leaves the reader with contrasting interpretations of Victor: he can be seen as a brilliant scientist or as the real villain of the story. -The Monster or the Creature: The monster is Victor Frankenstein’s creation, assembled from old body parts and animated by a mysterious spark. He has a terrible appearance (so large and frightening), but he's kind, generous, and innocent like a child. His aspect prevents him to have a healthy relationship with other people and he begins angry and revengeful. Left by his creator and confused, he tries to integrate himself into society, getting only human’s hate. Looking in the mirror, he realizes his physical aspect, which blinds society to his kind nature. He starts to hate his creator and mankind because he is seen only with beatings and disgust. The death of his creator fills him with joy because Victor has caused him so much suffering but also with sadness because Victor is the only person with, he had any sort of relationship. -Robert Walton: Walton is the narrator of Victor Frankenstein and his monster story. Walton makes a strong and meaningful friendship with Victor. -Margaret Saville: She’s Robert’s sister and she’s also the addressee of all his letters. -Elizabeth Lavenza: Elizabeth is Frankenstein’s adopted sister and his wife. She is also a mother- figure. Elizabeth covers many roles in Frankenstein’s life, so when the Monster kills her Frankenstein is private of almost every form of female companionship at once. Elizabeth dies because at a crucial moment Frankenstein overlooks her entirely, without caring about his health. -Caroline Frankenstein: She's Victor's mum. She has a particular interest in social problems. Unfortunately, she died cause of scarlet fever when Victor is 17 years old. From this childhood trauma, he starts to plan his project. -Henry Clerval: He's the best friend of the protagonist. He helps him to create the monster. Clerval is firstly described as a boy who loved enterprise, difficulties and even danger. Like Walton, Clerval shares Frankenstein’s desire to achieve great things at any cost. Frankenstein’s friendship with Clerval also shows the importance of companionship in the novel. Frankenstein draws strength and comfort from having a friend who shares his experiences and feelings. -Justine Moritz: She's the maid of Frankenstein's family. She is accused of the murder of Victor's little brother, William Frankenstein. She is executed. In reality, the creature killed William. -De Lacey: he's the householder of De Lacey's family. He's the only person with which the creature manages to have a real dialogue because the householder is blind. (the family that the monster was observing). PLOT:  In the 18th Century, a young Captain, Robert Walton, writes some letters to his sister telling her about his exploration of the North Pole, allowed by the resources that he received from his cousin. In the fourth letter he writes about something very odd he experienced: his ship got stuck in the ice, and the crew noticed a gigantic figure driving a dog sled. The next morning, they found the same dog sled with another person as a driver. In order to save the man, who was very sick, the crew embarked him on the ship. The man told the crew he was following a runaway in the North Pole. Walton writes to his sister he is getting fond of the man and he is transcribing what the man is telling to him. This is the beginning of Victor Frankenstein’s story. Frankenstein comes from a famous Swiss family and from the childhood he became interested in scientific studies, specialising in Chemistry and Natural Philosophy and attending the University of Ingolstadt until his mother’s death. Young Victor is described as a man obsessed with the utopia to impart life to non-living matter and he tries to create a living being. Because of the difficulty in replicating the minute parts of human body, Victor makes the Creature so large. One night, the humanoid comes to life but, after looking at him, Victor is frightened and run away. Indeed, the Creature is hideous, with yellow eyes and skins that barely covers his body. The monster takes Victor’s diary and escapes as well. Victor falls ill from the experience and is nursed back to health by his friend Henry Clerval. After a four-month recovery, he returns home in Geneva when he learns of the murder of his brother William. When he arrives in Geneva, Victor sees the Creature near the crime scene, so he believes that his creation is responsible for the murder. Justin Moritz, William’s nanny, is convicted of the crime after William’s locket is found in her pocket. Victor cannot tell the truth because he knows that no one would believe his story. The man, thus, retreats to the mountain, where he finds the Creature who pleads guilty for the murder of Victor’s brother and tells him about his tale. The Creature is intelligent and articulate and tells him that everyone was afraid and frightened by him because of his hideous appearance. Victor understands that the Creature has got human feelings and wishes to be happy like everyone else. The Creature finally persuades Victor to create a female partner like himself, promising that he and his mate will disappear forever Victor starts working on the female creature, but he is plagued by premonitions of disaster, he imagines that the female can become more evil than his first Creature or that the two creatures might lead to the creation of a race that could plague mankind. So, he destroys the unfinished creature, but the Monster, who was following Victor, watches the scene through a window. The Creature vows that he will have his revenge. Victor flees to Ireland, but the Creature follows him and he kills Victor’s friend Henry, leaving the corps to be found where his creator had arrived, causing another mental breakdown to Victor in prison. Then, Victor returns home with his father. He is about to marry Elizabeth and he prepares to kill the Creature, arming himself with pistols and a dagger, but he fails and the monster escapes. They get married, but, unfortunately, the Creature kills Elizabeth during their honeymoon. Victor’s father dies a few days later because of the pain caused by Elizabeth’s death. Seeking revenge, Victor follows the Creature up to the North Pole to kill him, but he collapses from exhaustion and hypothermia before Walton and the crew find him. Despite his condition, Victor wants to find the Creature but he dies first. At the end of the story, Walton discovers the Creature on his ship, mourning over Victor’s body. The Creature tells Walton that Victor’s death makes him
