Ten days after Mary’s birth, her mother died and four years later her father married Mary Jane Clairmont and she and one of her daughters were to be the cause of Mary Shelley’s sufferings and troubles. The house of Mary’s father was visited by some of the most famous writers of the day: Samuel Coleridge and Percy Shelley. The latter was immediately attracted by the young and beautiful Mary Godwin, so in July 1814 the couple fled to France were buy a country house on the banks of Lake Geneva. It was there that the writing of Frankenstein took place. In 1818 Frankenstein was published anonymously. Returned to England Mary continued to publish and write. She died in 1851. Frankenstein Plot : Victor Frankenstein is a Swiss scientist who creates a human being using parts of different corpses, but the result of the experiment is tremendously ugly. The monster becomes a murderer and in the end, he destroys his creator. The story is told through a series of letters written by Walton, a young explorer on an expedition to the North Pole, addressed to his sister. The events of the story happen all over Europe, from Geneva to the Alps, to France, England, and Scotland, as well as at Ingolstadt University. The most important setting is the Pole, where Walton finds Frankenstein: this setting shows the states of mind of these two characters, who are depressed, empty and lonely. The origins: In the introduction to the novel, Mary Shelley explained Frankenstein’s origin. It seems that the reading of ghost stories, speculation about the reanimation of corpses, her pain for her sense of loss at the death of her mother, together created a nightmare that terrified her. The influence of science: Mary Shelley dedicated Frankenstein to her father and used ideas held by her parents like social justice and education. She sympathized with the monster but is afraid of the consequences of his actions. So, there is tension between the fear of revolution and interest in the revolutionary ideas. Even the influence of Percy Shelley was important. He and Mary were interested in science and chemistry. She knew the latest scientific theories in chemistry, evolutionism, and electricity. These sources provided contrasting scientific attitudes important to the conception of science whose protagonist is the first embodiment of the theme of science.
