SAN FRANCISCO In 1776, colonists from Spain established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission names St. Francis of Assisi on the site. Thanks to the California Gold Rush of 1849 the city experienced a period of rapid growth, an increase in population and became the largest city on the West Coast at the time. Later, three quarters of the city was destroyed by an earthquake and fire in 1906 and San Francisco was rebuilt later, also hosting the panama pacific International exposition 9 years later. Today San Francisco is the major seaport of the Pacific Coast and one the most beautiful cities in the world. San Francisco is best known for its mild climate, its restaurants, unconventional spaces and typical modern and Victorian architecture. San Francisco is divided into 9 counties: San Francisco and San Mateo cover the southern peninsula, where San Jose blends Silicon Valley technology with Spanish colonial architecture. In the northern peninsula lies Marin County which is rich in wildlife and Muir Woods, which is a giant redwood forest. On the eastern shore of the bay there are Contra Coast, Solano, Santa Clara and Alameda counties, while in the northern part there are Sonoma and Napa counties WHAT TO SEE The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most important landmarks and iconic symbol in San Francisco, and it is also one of the world’s largest suspension bridge. It was opened in 1937 and connects the city with Marin County. The bridge has six lanes for vehicles plus a free pedestrian walkway.
