BARRIERS TO GIRLS EDUCATION Before the COVID-19 pandemic, about 130 million girls around the world were not in school, and now 11 million girls might not go back to school this year. These numbers represent real girls who are being denied their right to an education and the opportunity to grow to their full potential. Research has shown that despite their best efforts, girls are unable to overcome prejudice, aggression and misogyny. THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER KEEP GIRLS OUT OF SCHOOL  POVERTY : even if education is free, uniforms or other supplies can make schools inaccessible for someone  CHILD MARRIAGE AND EARLY PREGNANCY : child brides are forced to drop out of school because their duty is to have children and take care of the household  LACK OF SAFE, PRIVATE GIRLS ONLY LATRINES : this makes girls, for example in Africa, miss school during their period  VIOLENCE : many girls suffer from various forms if violence in the school environment and if the parents find out, they might remove them from school for safety.  LONG DISTANCE TO SCHOOL : if they have to travel to go to school the risk to experience violence or harassment increases.  GENDER INEQUALITY : in many countries girls are still kept in the house to take care of the family and do housework. CHAMPION OF CHANGE I have found this program called Champions of Change that promotes gender equality, girls’ rights and change in social norms through youth engagement and peer-to-peer groups with boys and girls aged 10-19. They have more than 220 organizations and operate in 155 countries. These are their guiding principles : 1. “men stepping up beside women” = men take responsibility with women to accelerate gender equality 2. “stand behind our numbers” means that we have to share every learned lesson 3. “shift the system” means that we have to avoid solutions that burden women to adapt. The goal of this program is to empower girls about their rights and to engage boys in a conversation about gender equality and the role they play in being allies for change.
