Located in the Valle d’Aosta and piedmont regions. The park is based above all on the safeguarding of its symbolic animal: the ibex. Wanted by King Vittorio Emanuele II The Royal Hunting Reserve of Gran Paradiso was born in 1856. On 3 December 1922 King Vittorio Emanuele III established the Gran Paradiso National Park with the aim of conserving the fauna and flora and preserving the special geological formations, as well as the beauty of the landscape. In the lower part there are larch woods, grasslands, broad-leaved woods composed of aspen, hazel, wild cherry, sycamore maple, oak, chestnut, ash, birch. The animal symbol of the park is the ibex, and we also find the chamois, the golden eagle, the fox, the lynx, the bearded vulture, the marmot, numerous species of birds and fish. We find 4 alpine lakes: the lakes of Nivolet Superiore, Trebecchi Inferiore, Trebecchi Superiore and that of Lillet. Of particular interest are: the limestone pavements, the Pinus uncinata forests, the low limestone marshes with alpine pioneer formations of Caricion bicoloris- atrofuscae, the dry grassy formations on limestone substrate, the active raised bogs, the wooded bogs. 1
