VOLLEYBALL Today I’m going to tell you something about volleyball and what this sport represents for me. In 1895 a physical director, William G. Morgan, had a problem: the newly created game of basketball was proving to be too strenuous for the local businessmen. He needed an alternative, something these older gentlemen could play without too much "bumping" or "jolting". It had to be physical and it couldn't be too aggressive. So, he borrowed from basketball, he took the ball, from tennis the net. The use of hands and the ability to play off the walls and over hangs, he borrowed from handball. And, from baseball, he took the concept of innings. He termed this new game "Mintonette”. Dr. Alfred Halstead, a professor at Springfield College, was at a conference of William Morgan and he suggested a two-word- version of its present name: "volleyball". Today the camp is 9x9 meters and the net is 2.24 m. high in the woman’s category and 2.42 m. in man’s. There are 6+1 players in each field, the first team which reaches 25 points wins a set. To win the whole match, it has to win 3 set in total.the team is made by 4 strikers, 1 dribble player and a “libero”. I’ve played volleyball since I was 6. I chose this sport because my sister played it and when I went to watch her matches, I felt very happy because I really like it! I remember that when I went to the gym, at the end of the matches, I played with my mum. Firstly, my mum signed me up for Minivolley, a sort of team where all the small children (from 6 to 11 years) can learn to play. Then I started to play in a real team and I began to play matches during the weekend. I remember my first match: I wore a red T-shirt with the number 40 and I was so excited because I was very proud to play a match with my mates. After that, I played in different teams and although I love this sport, it isn’t easy to pull together volleyball and school. Sometimes I go to bed late because I don’t have enough time to do my homework or to study during the afternoon because I have my volleyball trainings. Moreover, on Saturday evening I have the match so I can’t go out or have fun with my friends. Volleyball isn’t a weight for me, because I love it and if I didn’t have volleyball trainings during the afternoon, I wouldn’t stay at home. To be honest, sometimes it’s difficult to get along with my mates or with my trainer. Sharing victories or defeats together helps growing and it makes you learn to work and to live with someone.
