ROBINSON CRUSOE 1 ROBINSON CRUSOE Very often we have the 1st person narrator, because it gives the appearance of authenticity. There are many details, things are described as for practical things and details. Things are described in order to show us what he has saved from the shipwreck, some of them may seem useless on an island. For example money, but this tells us the importance of money at the time, because it was the result of hard work, not because it was money itself. All that people did was a sign of their good intention and willingness to be in a position to be chosen by God. If they worked hard they were eligible from God. It demonstrate the importance he gave to money. When he arrives on the island he’s afraid it could be inhabited by wild cannibals and people. He had already experienced being taken as a slave by some Portuguese people. He had succeed in fleeing because he had been helped by a native young guy, but he sold this boy in order to get money → it tells us the importance he gave to native people. His name is Friday (he’s moorish), which is not a Christian name because he isn’t worth, it is given by Robinson he doesn’t ask for his name → colonialsm and racist behavior. He’s taught to use Master talking to Robinson, Yes, No and Friday, those are the four words that Robinson needed him to know. There’s an attitude of superiority. Robinson already had some skills and tools but only when Friday arrived he got some labour force: capitalism. He was never his peer. Friday arrived on one day after many years brought by some other black people as a captive and Robinson saves him because he has a gun. So the white man has a weapon but his saving is because he wants some company and the weapon makes the difference. It’s a series of events not a real plot, not a story with different events. He does what he can to exploit what nature can give him and he succeeds in rebuilding on the island what is a place more similar to Britain than he could. He tries to recreate a British and English environment. Friday is given some clothes. He build a shelter in case of attack, a second house. He is a perfect example of British citizen at the time for his behavior towards Friday and also because of the use of tools, he tries to rebuild a British environment with some leisure. He starts growing some props from some seeds he had saved. He is industrious and clever Nature is exploited but never described, it is only mentioned the use Robinson make of it. There is no analysis of the feelings of Robinson and Friday. The fact is practical things. Industriousness was extremely important. He build a boat, the description
