ROBINSON CRUSOE- Daniel Defoe INSPIRATION Daniel Defoe's novel is based on true events. It was inspired by Alexander Selkirk's adventures, who, like Robinson, left the ship to live alone on an island. Alexander Selkirk ate goats and shellfish and made clothes from goatskins like Robinson, he chased goats with gunpowder. Moreover both characters read the Bible to help their emotional state. Robinson once killed a cat but meat wasn't good to eat, whereas Alexander slept near cats to protect himself from rats. Selkirk died from a tropical disease in 1721. SUMMARY Robinson was born in York in 1632 from an English mother and a German father. Against (contro) his parents' will he decided to leave on a boat trip. While the ship was going to London, there was a storm. The ship sinked while Robinson and his friends were escaping in the other boat. He went to London by land, there he met the captain of a ship, they soon became friends and left together for Africa. Then his friend died and Robinson decided to do the same voyage. While he was sailing to Africa, some Turks took him prisoner. After, while fishing, Robinson freed himself and another slave Xury, they were brought to Brazil ad managed to begin a new life but he wasn't happy with it, so he agreed to go on a trip to but some slaves with other farm managers. There was a storm for twelve days, then a sailor saw the land, and Robinson arrived on the shore half dead. Robinson thanked God because he was alive. The morning after Robinson arrived on the island he swam to the ship to get as many things as possible from it. He built a high fence around his tent so that he couldn't be attacked by animals or men and he felt safer. Every day he went hunting goats. He was very unhappy but tried to be positive in that situation. He made a cross on the beach to remember when it was Sunday and he started a sort of diary. Every day Robinson worked until eleven and then ate. During Christmas the weather was cold. Robinson decided to keep goats to eat. On the ship he found seeds and planted them. He became ill twice and had fever. It was a life of work and the praise of God. Once, after two years he found a footprint on the sand and he was terrified, he started thinking it was left by natives. That day on the beach he found human skulls, bones, hands and feet, the natives had a feast eating the bodies of other men. He was afraid that the natives could see or hear him, so he began to think about killing them, but he realised that he had no right to do that. Robinson saw a fire burning on the beach and saw nine natives who recently had had a feast. On the 24th year of stay, he saw a ship in trouble, so Robinson built a fir on the hill because he wanted the people on the ship to know he was there, but the following day they were all dead. One night Robinson had a dream which became reality: he saw about 30 natives who brought 2 prisoners. They killed one of them and the other escaped. Robinson ran down to the beach with his gun and hit one native and shot the other. The prisoner touched his sword, he gave it to him and killed the other native. Robinson took the native to his house and gave him food and water, he told him his name was Friday and to call him master. (Friday was the day he saved his life). Robinson built a tent for him and made clothes. Friday learned to speak quickly. He enjoyed goat meat very much and he said he wasn't going to eat human meat again. Robinson taught Friday to make bread. Then one day Robinson asked Friday a few things and he told him that
