ROMEO AND JULIET ( Shakespeare) PLOT In Verona there is an old fight going on between the Capulets and the Montagues. Romeo (a Montague) and his friends decide to go to a party being held by the Capulets to meet Rosalinde, the women that he's in love with. They wear masks to don't be recognised by their enemies. Romeo meets Juliet, and they Instantly fall In love. After leaving the party, Romeo returns to meet Juliet. The two young lovers know that their families will not agree to their marriage; and Juliet is already promised to Paris. STAR-CROSSED LOVERS Eriar Lawrence marries them. Immediately after the wedding, Romeo is involved in a street fight between members of the two families where he kills Tybalt. Because of this crime Romeo is banished from Verona and have to go to Mantua. But Juliet has to marry Count Paris the next day. Friar proposes a solution: he will give Juliet a sleeping potion that will make her appear to be dead. The Friar will send a letter to Romeo explaining the plan but (it doesn't) fails to reach Romeo, who is told that Juliet is dead. Romeo go to rescue her apparently dead body and buys some poison and goes to Juliet's tomb. Here Romeo kills Paris who wants to prevent him from seeing Juliet, then drinks the poison and dies by Juliet's side. When she awakes and realises that Romeo is dead, she stabs herself with his dagger. The Friar explains what has happened to the two families and the Montagues and Capulets are reunited over the dead bodies of their children. MAIN THEMES e Love. Romantic, passionate love is a force that overwhelms all other values. ® (The individual and society. Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet are forced to battle against public and social institutions. The story shows us a battle between the private desires of the Individual and the crushing power of the responsibilities and actions Imposed by social institutions) ® Fate. In its opening address to the audience, the Chorus describes Romeo and Juliet as 'star- crossed' lovers. Throughout the play fate controls events. series of manifestations of adverse fate that inevitably lead to the tragic conclusion of the play MAIN CHARACTERS As the title of the play suggests, the action revolves around the two protagonists: Romeo and Juliet. Romeo is a fully rounded character: he is a handsome young man who has a passionate character anda strong tendency to be impulsive, is driven by passion. LANGUAGE : courtly love tradition, describe Juliet as a saint (vedi balcony scene), platonic love, he would face everything for her (vedi balcony scene) Juliet at the beginning of the play she appears shy and obedient, but as she falls in love with Romeo, she suddenly grows and shows her maturity, independence and her ability to defend her love against any obstacle. Juliet is a passionate woman who refuses to be idealised even by her lover and constantly defends her right to be a real woman. LANGUAGE: more realistic, state facts
