The balcony was part of the structure of the play. It’s night after the ball and Juliet is changing for the night. Romeo is hiding - it’s dangerous. He wants to see her again. Enter ROMEO ROMEO He jests at scars that never felt a wound. JULIET appears above at a window But, soft(quite)! what light through yonder window breaks? -> perfect iambic pentameter, beginning of speech about love. Poetical, divine and superior. It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. -> Light is the east(sunrise) so Juliet is the sun -> she gives light to the darkness of the place and of the situation (it’s night time) - she gives hope to the situation. Sun because he is more in love with Juliet. The love grows and the com- passion too. Arise(sorgere), fair sun, and kill the envious(invidiosa) moon, -> an other reference to the sun, symmetry of opposites. Juliet is compared opposite of something else. She is supe- rior to the moon because it’s smaller, it’s the reflex of the beauty of the sun. Who is already sick and pale with grief(pain, sorrow), That thou(you) her maid(dama di compagnia) art(are) far more fair than she: -> she is much more beautiful then the moon. She overshadows the moon. Be not her maid, since she is envious; Her vestal livery is but sick and green -> personificazione della luna, vestita con una livrea, verde e malata. Vestali donne di Diana - associate to the divinity. It’s green because it’s sick of envy(invidia - essere verdi d’invidia). Jealousy and envy are associated to green. And none but fools do wear it; cast it off(gettala via). It is my lady, O, it is my love! O, that she knew she were! -> he is talking to himself, he is not sure about Juliet feelings. She speaks yet she says nothing: what of that? Her eye discourses(are telling something important); I will answer it. -> Juliet can not see Romeo. She is moving her lips but he can’t hear because he is too far. She is talking to someone but we don’t know about what. I am too bold(sfacciato), 'tis not to me she speaks: -> she is not talking to him, he doesn’t feel right to go and talk to her. He is not sure if she wants to stay with him. What if her eyes were there, they(the stars) in her head? -> esaltazione della bellezza di Giulietta. Juliet eyes are is the sky and the stars in the head - what would happen? The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars, As daylight doth a lamp; her eyes in heaven -> figure of speech that exaggerated compari- sons/descriptions = HYPERBOLE — highlight the beauty of Juliet. Hyperbolic expressions are typical of love. Would through the airy region stream so bright That birds would sing and think it were not night. -> the cheeks would overshadow the stars and her eyes would be so bright to make everyone think that is not night. Every part of Juliet is bright and chases the dark away. Iperbole tende all’infinito. See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand! O, that I were a glove upon that hand, That I might touch that cheek! -> hypothetical period, he wants to be a glove to touch her cheek. Giulietta sta per parlare. JULIET Ay me! -> expression of sorrow/exclamation (ahimè). He is closer to the balcony, he can hear her. ROMEO She speaks: O, speak again, bright angel! for thou art (because you are) As glorious to this night, being o'er my head As is a winged messenger of heaven -> he is comparing her to an angel. Unto the white-upturned( guardano verso le nubi) wondering eyes Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him When he bestrides(walks) the lazy-pacing(dal passo pigro) clouds And sails upon the bosom of the air (sopra le nuvole). -> viene interrotto dalle parole di Giulietta. JULIET O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? -> she has not seen Romeo yet. She is talking her thoughts out. She says something simple, her thoughts are not complicated.
