Romeo, a Montague, decides to go to a party being held by the Capulets. They wear masks in order not to be recognised by their enemies 3. They instantly fall in love but they know that their families will not agree to their marriage: Juliet’s father has promised her to Count Paris. The two lovers arrange a secret marriage. 4. After the wedding, Romeo is involved in a street fight between members of the two families. His Mercutio is fatally wounded by Tybald. Romeo draws his sword and kills Tybald. Romeo is banned from Verona 5. Juliet is desperate therefore Friar Lawrence proposes a solution: he will give Juliet a sleeping potion that will make her appear to be dead. The Friar will send a letter to Romeo to explain the plan. 6. By a terrible twist of fate, the Friar’s message fails to reach Romeo, who is told that Juliet is dead. Romeo buys some poison, goes to Juliet’s tomb, drinks the potion and dies by Juliet’s side. When she awakes, realises that Romeo is dead, she stabs herself. The Montagues and the Capulets are reconciled over the dead bodies of their children. MAIN THEMES Love Romeo and Juliet is the most famous love story in English literature and love is the most dominant theme of the play. Romantic, passionate love is a force that overwhelms all other values. The individual and society The story shows us a battle between the private desire of the individual and the crushing power of the responsibilities imposed by social institutions. Family and paternal power lie at the heart of the feud between the two families of Verona. In this patriarchal world, Juliet is extremely vulnerable.
