The rivalry between the two families will end only with the death of Romeo and Juliet. In the first act, which covers the whole day, we see a brawl in the streets of Verona between the rival families of the Montagues and the Capulets, which is stopped by the intervention of the Prince of Verona, Escalus, who warns the members of the two families no longer quarrel, on pain of death. We meet for the first time Romeo Montecchi, in love with Rosalina, a Capulet, who does not correspond. While meeting the girl Romeo decides to participate with his friends in the costume party organized by the Capulets that same evening, of course they will not be recognized thanks to the masks. At the ball Romeo meets Giulietta Capuleti, not yet fourteen; the two fall in love at first sight, but soon discover their true identity. Meanwhile Juliet's father has promised his daughter in marriage to Count Paride, a relative of the Lord of Verona. In the second act, Romeo, even though he knows he is risking his life, illegally enters the Capuleti estate and reaches Juliet's balcony. He listens to her as he speaks aloud about his love for him; at this point the boy reveals his presence and declares his love to Juliet. The two lovers decide to get married in secret as soon as possible. The next day Juliet will send a messenger to Romeo to find out where and when they will get married. The following morning Romeo goes to church with Friar Lorenzo to convince him to celebrate the marriage. Friar Lorenzo agrees thinking that the love between the two young people can finally put an end to the feud between the two families. Giulietta confides in her nurse and sends her to Romeo, who tells her about the marriage plan. The girl will have to go to church with Friar Lorenzo with the excuse of having to confess and the wedding will be celebrated here. In addition, Romeo gives the nurse a rope ladder that will allow him to reach his love on his wedding night. The third act is the longest and most eventful. After the secret marriage between Romeo and Juliet, Tebaldo, Juliet's irascible temperament cousin, seeks Romeo to challenge him to a duel. Romeo tries to avoid quarrels and refuses to fight, but a fight breaks out too, during which his friend Mercutio is killed by Tebaldo. Romeo kills Tybalt to avenge the death of Mercutio. The Capulets ask the Prince of Verona to sentence Romeo to death, but he instead condemns him to exile. The nurse informs Giulietta of what happened, and the girl is desperate both for the death of her cousin and for the condemnation of her beloved. Romeo finds refuge with Friar Lorenzo and before leaving for Mantua, he spends the night with Giulietta. Meanwhile, the girl's parents organize her marriage to Count Paride, but she opposes and refuses to marry him, so her father threatens to disinherit her and drive her away from home. Finally, Giulietta pretends to consent to the marriage. In the fourth act a desperate Juliet seeks the help of Friar Lorenzo.
