ROMEO AND JULIET: PLOT Romeo and Juliet opens with a prologue introducing the setting backstory and plot of the play. The setting is Verona, in Italy; and the backstory is the two rival families: the montagues and capulets, who have been the cause of recent violence in Verona. The plot is that two children of the families: Romeo and Juliet will fall in love but in the end will commit suicide. The action began with the servants from the households exchanging insults and fighting in the streets. The Lords of the household arrive and pull out their swords to fight and just then the prince arrives and declares their Feud is illegal. We are introduced to Romeo Montague who is lamenting his unrequited love for Rosaline, and his friend Benvolio tells Romeo, they'll find another girl for him. Meanwhile Juliet learns that she has a Suitor the young count Paris: and the capulets are hosting a masquerade party where Paris and Juliet can meet. Romeo, Benvolio and Mercutio sneak into the party and Romeo falls in love with Juliet. Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, finds out Romeo is there and wants to fight him but Lord Capulet tells him no. Romeo and Juliet flirt, kiss, after the party Romeo sneaks into the capulets orchard where he and Juliet declare their love. They decide to get married and the next morning Friar Laurence secretly marries them. Later that day, Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel but he refuses. Mercutio defense Romeo's honor and is killed by Tybalt. In the climax, Romeo kills Tybalt, but the prince enters and banishes Romeo from Verona. Before leaving Verona, Romeo and Juliet consummate their marriage and the next morning Romeo leaves for Mantua. Lord Capulet enters Juliet's room to tell her she is marrying Paris, but she rejects his command and he threatens to disown her. In the final action Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence who he suggests she should drink a potion which will give her fake dead for 42 hours while the friar had to inform Romeo about it. She drinks the poison and the family in Paris find her seemingly dead. Romeo hears news of Juliet's death before receiving the Friars letter. Romeo comes to her tomb and Paris confronts him: Romeo kills Paris. Romeo finds Juliet seemingly dead and kills himself with poison. Juliet wakes up finds Romeo dead and stabs herself with his dagger. During the resolution the heart broken families find the dead youths and decide to end their feud. ROMEO AND JULIET: CHARACTERS Romeo Montague is presented as a man belonging to the 'courtly love convention' for his unconditional love for Juliet. Romeo when he first sees Juliet, he compares her to the brilliant light of the torches that illuminate the Capulets' great hall; Juliet is the light that frees him from his dark melancholy. Even in the famous balcony scene Romeo links Juliet to the sunlight, daylight and the light emanating from angels. His love for Juliet makes him dynamic and courageous: he risks his life to be near her, breaks a banishment order risking death, to see her again, and at the end he commits suicide rather than live without Juliet. Juliet Capulet is beautiful, rebellious, kind and loving. At the beginning she appears as an obedient child: she usually does what her parents say. But her first meeting with Romeo causes her to move towards maturity: she does not kill herself because of her weakness as a woman, but rather because of her strong love, just as Romeo did. Just like Romeo, she compares their love to light, to suggest that their love is just like lightning, that is, a break in the blackness of the night sky.
