Romeo and Juliet    The most important sources of the tragedy was the italian one and, in particular, from                              the Matteo Bandello. Italy was chosen like setting of Romeo and Juliet because it was                              recognised as an exotic city, which represented the perfect place for intrigues or                          Machiavelli’s plots.      The plot    The plot of this play is setting in Verona, in particular, along the feud between the                                Capulets and the Montagues: two of the most important families who were in conflict.                            They meet each other in a party hold by the Capulets where Romeo is dressed up in                                  order not to be recognised. At their first meet, they instantly fall in love, so, in the                                  future, they would have wanted to celebrate their marriage, despite knowing that their                          families wouldn't agree that and that Juliet was promised with another man. So, they                            decide to marry in secret. But, after the death of the cousin of Juliet who before killed                                  the friend of Romeo, Romeo is banished from Verona. Meanwhile, Juliet has to marry                            another man, so, the friar give a sleeping potion to Juliet in order to make her appear                                  dead and let her escape with Romeo. However, the friar's letter sent to Romeo                            explaining the plan fails to reach Romeo and he finds the apparent dead body of Juliet                                in the Capulet tomb. So, he poisons himself and he dies but when Juliet awakes and                                realises his death, she stabs herself with his dagger.    Main themes  1. The passionate love that is more important than social status or family authority                          that, however, make them die because their families oppose their love because                        public life is more important than the private life.  2. The individual and society: there is a gape between individual desires and the                          duties imposed by society and the family.  3. The patriarchal society, where womens are subjected by the mens and the                        daughters are subjected by their husbands or fathers.  4. The absence of dialogue between the parents and their children. In                      particular, is not possible for a women to decide on her own about what she                              wants do in her life.  5. The faith. In fact, the two guys are called “star-crossed lovers”. Faith controls                          everything and creates a lot of misunderstanding that lead to the tragedy.  6. Poor timing defites the two lovers and lead them to death.
