Romeo and Juliet Plot In Verona,the long-standing quarrel between the Montagues and Capulets breaks into violence. 1st act= it covers one day and it starts in a Verona street. Romeo Montague reveals his love for Rosaline to his cousin Benvolio, but she doesn't love him back. Romeo's friends persuade him to go a party at the Capulets' house in disguise, because there will be Rosaline. Romeo meets Juliet, and they fall in love at first sight but they discover that their families are sworn enemies 2nd act=Romeo hears Juliet admits her love for him in Capulets' garden. He answers her and after they declared their love, they get married by Friar Laurence in secret. The act ends with their marriage, hoping that it stops the quarrel between the two families 3rd act= This is the longest act, divided in two parts: the part of the public events full of action, and the part of private events. Mercutio, Romeo's friend, is killed by Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, during a street fight. In revenge Romeo kills Tybalt and is banished from Verona to Mantua. This act ends with Romeo and Juliet's wedding night. 4th act= Juliet takes a drug that makes her apparently dead, given to her by Friar Laurence, because she doesn't want to marry Paris. The Friar sends a messenger to allert Romeo but It arrives after that Romeo hears that Juliet is dead and decides to go to Verona. 5th act= Romeo arrives to Juliet's tomb and takes some poison, dying as he kisses her. Juliet wakes up and she sees Romeo dead so she kills herself with Romeo's dagger. Romeo and Juliet will never know the truth about their death. Setting Shakespeare chose as setting Verona and the social context of the play borns from the struggles between Capulets and Montagues to gain the political control of the city. Characters In the 1st act we can see that Romeo is a man that follows the courtly love convention, because of his adoration and respect for a chaste and impossible lady. He feels adoration because love is built in the time. When Romeo meets Juliet he uses light as a metaphor to describe her, as she lights up his dark world(He compares her to the light of the torches in the Capulets' hall). Romeo is immature and he is dependent on Juliet in fact he kills himself because he can't live without Juliet and as a last proof of love for her. Juliet is beautiful, strong, determined and kind. At the beginning she appears as an obedient child, but the meeting with Romeo makes her more mature and rebellious. She shows her determination when she admits her feelings for Romeo. She isn't an idealized woman but she is a real woman. She like Romeo compares their love to light, as a lightening because their love is fast and sudden and because is a break in the blackness of night sky. Juliet is more adult and realist than Romeo because she already known the tragic ending of this story. Moreover she kills herself not because she is a weakness woman but because of her strong love. Themes The themes are: -The power of love; -Passion and violence; -Individual against society, Romeo and Juliet dissociate themselves from the struggle between their families; -The power of fate from the beginning of the prologue the chorus state that Romeo and Juliet are star-crossed lovers; meaning that their love will end tragically.
