Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet belong to two contrasting families from Verona, the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo reveals to his cousin, Benvolio, his unrequited love for Rosaline; Romeo goes to a party at the Capulets' house to see Rosaline, but here he meets Juliet for the first time and they fall in love at first sight. However, they discover that their families are enemies. Having learned that his love for Juliet is reciprocated, Romeo and Juliet decide to marry in secret in the chapel of Friar Laurence. Mercutio, a Romeo's friend, is killed during a fight by Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, who will then be killed by Romeo in revenge. After her wedding night with Romeo, Juliet, in order to avoid her marriage to Count Paris, wanted by her father, takes a potion that makes her look dead. Romeo feels that Juliet is dead and joins her; he takes a potion, dying as he kisses her. After awakening, Juliet sees Romeo dead besides her, so she stabs herself with hir dagger. The two lovers will never know the truth about their death. Hamlet Hamlet’s father, king of Denmark, has been dead for two months and his mother, Gertrude, married her brother-in-law Claudius. King of Denmark’s ghost has appeared armed for a possible attack on the prince of Norway. Hamlet and his friend Horatio arrange to meet the ghost, who tells Hamlet that he was killed by Claudius with poison in his ears and asks his son to avenge him. Hamlet pretends to be mad and arranges for a story similar to that of the ghost to be recited in the court. While the play is being presented Claudio leaves. Hamlet kills Polonius, king’s counsellor, during a quarrel with his mother. Claudio sends Hamlet to England to have him killed. Meanwhile Ophelia, Polonius’ daughter, drowns herself, and her brother Laertes, in agreement with Claudio, challenged Hamlet to a duel. They try to poison Hamlet, but Gertrude drinks the poison and dies. Hamlet hits Laertes with the sword poisoned by Claudio, but then he is hit too. However, Hamlet manage to kill Claudio and then he recommends Horatio that Fortinbras be elected king of Denmark. Othello Othello, a dark-skinned Moor, a general in the Venetian army, has secretly married Desdemona, the daughter of a noble. Together they leave for Cyprus against the Turks. Iago, Moor’s attendant, plots against him to have Cassio, the Moor’s lieutenant, dimissed. Iago tells how he intends to separate Desdemona and Otello. He manages to make Othello believe that Desdemona loves Cassio, through a handkerchief from Desdemona placed in Cassio's lodgings. This arouses much jealousy and upset in Othello, and to restore order, Othello kills his wife. Othello, however, discovers too late that he has been tricked and kills himself. Iago is imprisoned and Cassio becomes Governor of Cyprus.
