Romeo and Juliet -1st great success -wrote in the 1st Phase near 1595/1596 -play full of poetic images, although it’s a play it contains a lot of Poetry -S. was supposed to write a comedy, but it ends in a tragedy because it mirrors his life with Vaiola -Structure is quite peculiar: ●1st /2nd act =Comedy = it contains the comedy dialogue , effects and illarious dialogues, there is the meeting of the lovers, the development and the marriage. S. combines all the elements in the first 2 acts. ●3rd act = Turning point = there is the change from comedy to tragedy, represent the pick, we consider it as the climax, we normally find the meaning /message of the story. Here enters to the scene Death. Here Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo kills Tybalt in revenge to his friend, from this scene the play become a tragedy ● 4th/5th = Tragedy -Themes: ●Love and Sacrifice, R&J die in the name of love, they represent the parental Relation between young and old generation ●Fate -Revolutions: 1)Structure, although still anchor on Greek traditional standard (the prologue, the epilog, the chorus and the concept of fate) 2)Juliet, who represents lot of revolutions:●new female character ●stereotype of modern age ●mature, strong-minted, determinate, ready to fight for her ideas, ready to oppose her family decisions S. wants to represent a different woman, who is no more weak, in fact Romeo is described in a different way from the others. With this play the most pragmatic character is no more a men but a woman. -Concept of light and darkness [day and night]: 1)Light=positive aspect 2)Darkness= it makes men fearless of the night and it’s a negative aspect ●Quite peculiar is that all the negative elements happen during the day such as Juliet argue with her parents and the duel of Romeo and Tybalt. On the other hand all the positive issues happen during the night like the balcony scene and the secret wedding. ●They both committed suicide, they die because of the social prejudices. They die in order to underline the symbol of the final sacrifice with a didactic purpose. -Chorus: ●performed by a men ●the narrative voice, it makes summaries of some events or explains things in order to help the audience ●it’s the first actor we see at the theatre -Stage directions are very limited (enter, exit, holding) -R&J opens with a sonnet, it’s the evidence that is highly based on poetry. -The prologue contains the story, the concept of Love-Fate-Hate and Sacrifice. Macbeth -S.focuses his attention on a couple and analyses the relationship -this story for some people is a homage to James I -although it is regarded as the shortest play, it’s the most troublesome work of S. -in this work hero and anti-hero coexist in the same character, Macbeth it’s a glorious general but becomes a murder -S.tries to analyse the human psychology, tries to analyses the double nature of the human soul(which can be both good or bad) -Macbeth the glorious knight becomes a murder, a hero becomes an anti-hero as a consequence of thirst of power and his ambition. !!!THERE IS THE CRIME AGAINST NATURE= A KNIGHT KILLS THE KING!!! -Couple : ●Macbeth&Lady Macbeth (is the real driving force of the play, another strong Woman who has influence to Macbeth ) ●Hero &Anti-hero -Fate represented by the three witches -Themes: ●Love ●Ambition ●Jealousy ●Fear ●Relationship Macbeth & Lady Macbeth characteristics -Violence and cruelty become the means of exploring the human mind’s darker recesses, it is morally centered on a deadly play for power. -The story develops against a sombre a Scottish background of deserted heaths, fogs, castles at night. -It’s a tragedy of the conversation of a good man, Macbeth, into one who is completely evil. -Macbeth the tragedy of power and ambition Main points of the Plot: ●Macbeth a brave general of Ducan ●He is driven by his ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth, to kill the monarch in order to become king of Scotland. ●He kills his friend Banquo and his descendants in order to remain king with his own lineage ●Macbeth is deserted from his friend even by his wife ●He dies in a duel with Macduff ●The Lady commits suicide cause by her crimes MACBETH LADY MACBETH -is brave and courageous man, one of Ducan’s most glorious generals -is more practical than her husband, she tries to calm him down -after killing the king, he is overwhelmed with fear, guilt and remorse. He knows that he will no longer enjoys peaceful nights of “innocent sleeping” -she shows full self-control and immediate practicality. -the dialogue between the couple is irregular, connoting anxiety and confusion. -she is strong, determinate and ambitious. Apparently she suffers no pangs of conscience -his instability to pray marks his final separation from God. -It is only in private that Lady Macbeth shows her weariness. Only after she has suffered a mental breakdown and has committed suicide.
