Introduction  Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families.  It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers. In fact, if we think of a love story, the figures of Romeo and Juliet immediately come to mind  It was performed for the first time in the 1597, by Lord Chamberlain's Men  The play was influenced by ‘’Troylous and Criseid’’ of Geoffrey Chaucer, ‘’Decameron’’ of Boccaccio, ‘’Pyramus and Tisbe’’, from ‘Methamophosys’’ of Ovidio, (witch is a story that Shakespease will reuse also for the comedy midsummer night) and from various tragedy written by Sophocles and Euripides.  During his youth he attended the grammar school, therefore he had a cultural background based on Greek and Latin classics Characters  Shakespeare did not take his characters from one social class: for aistocracy we have the two families Montagius and Capulet, but we have also peolpe from lower social class like Juliet’s nurse or Friar Lawrence.  Romeo belonge to the courtly love convention: we can see it from his language: ‘’Oh my sunlight, speak again, bright Angel!’’ (from the balcony scenes) Romeo connects the idea of love to light and compares Juliet to an angel; these are typical themes of the Italian sonnets.  He is dynamic and courages, spontaneous and impulsive, but always loyal to her love.  THE POWER OF FATE= At the begginning in the prologue, the chorus state that Romeo and Juliet are ‘’star cross’d lovers’’. The tragic ending results from a pattern whith includes the elements of change and the moe powerful elemen of incomplete knowledge.  ABSENCE OF COMMUNICATION= They do not confess their love to their families: young people do not confide in the older generations and parents do not listen and do not understand their sons. Shakespeare explain that absent of communication during the plot: When Juliet tries to tell her father she doesn't want to marry Paris and the father doesn't listen to her, when the message of Juliet's apparent death does not arrive, when Romeo is informed erroneously. All misunderstandings lead to death.  LIGHT AND DARKNESS= The use of the contrast between light and shadow incessantly animates the events narrated in Romeo and Juliet. Normally this dynamic is perceived as a contrast between life and death, love and war: they cannot love each other in the light of the sun and something as pure and sincere as their love is constantly done in the dark, at night, in secret, while feuds and murders are made publicly during the day.
