Two wealthy families, the Montagues and the Capulets, have another brawl. Soon after, the head of the Capulet family plans a feast. His goal is to introduce his daughter Juliet to a Count named Paris who seeks to marry Juliet. Romeo tells to his cousin Benvolio that he is in love with Rosaline, but that his love is not returned. Romeo and his friends (Benvolio and Mercutio) hear of the party and resolve to go in disguise. Romeo comes because he hopes to see his beloved Rosaline at the party. 2. They gatecrash at the Capulet party and there Romeo meets Juliet Capulet. He falls in love with her instantly. But they discover they are sworn enemies due to their feuding families. 3. Romeo stays near the Capulet house to talk with Juliet when she appears on her balcony. Romeo over hears Juliet express her love for him. So he answers her, they declare their love and intend to marry the next day, with the help of Juliet’s nurse and Friar Laurence. Romeo goes to celebrate his marriage with his friends, Mercutio and Benvolio, but gets into a fight with Juliet's cousin, Tybalt. Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo avenges his death by killing Tybalt. 4. The Prince banishes Romeo from Verona to Mantua because he killed Tybalt. 5. Capulet, Juliet's father, decides she should marry Paris. Juliet to avoid the marriage goes to Friar Laurence where they come up with a plan for her and Romeo to be together. In this way Juliet takes this potion that makes her appear to be dead on the morning of her wedding. 6. Juliet fakes her death and lies in a tomb waiting for Romeo to come so they can run away together. The Friar sends a messenger to Mantua, but Romeo doesn't receive the message about the plan, so thinks Juliet has actually died. He goes to Verona and sees Juliet in her tomb, 'dead'. 7. Romeo drinks some poison so he can be with Juliet in death. She wakes up to discover Romeo is dead. So Juliet kills herself with his dagger. 8. The Friar returns with the Prince, the Capulets, and Romeo's father. The deaths of their children lead the families to make peace, and they promise to erect a monument in Romeo and Juliet's memory. Themes The power of love: Romeo and Juliet’s love is so powerful that it becomes more important to them than their families, their loyalties, or even their lives. Passion and violence: The same passion leads to violence, from Tybalt’s death to the lovers’ suicide.
