RUPERT BROOKE (ENGLAND 1887-GREECE 1915) ● He studied at King’s College in Cambridge, where he started writing poems. ● First poems: representation of an idyllic view of the English countryside. ● He travelled abroad, in Italy too. ● He was commissioned into the Royal Naval Division during the outbreak of WWI. ● 1912: “Georgian Poetry”: he belonged to the Georgian poets, who rejected the didactic style of Victorian poetry, and dealt with humble themes, with melancholic tones. ● Most famous collection of sonnets “1914 & Other poems”, published the year of his death: PATRIOTISM AND WAR ● His positive view of war comes from the fact that he didn't know the trenches, because he died before the Battle of Somme. ○ This explains a lot his enthusiasm and exaltation over the experience of war, idealised as a purifying experience for people and nations. ● No elements of tragedy and loss which characterised the following war poems. ● War is seen as a triumph of patriotism and heroism. ● These poems represent the exalted mood of Britain during these years. THE SOLDIER ● 14 lines, Petrarchan sonnet: ● L.1-8: prophetic part: ○ If he dies, his corpse will remain abroad and so that piece of land where it lays, will forever be part of England, and the soil becomes richer. ■ “concealed”: because he would be buried underground. ○ Idealisation of England: “blest by suns”, it’s unlikely: England is always rainy. ○ England is personified as a mother who gave birth to the poet, so dying while fighting for England would be a good way to thank her. ■ He would give her back what he received: life, by becoming “dust”. ● L.9-14: Turning point: ○ England is idealised to the point that the poet compares “her” to Heaven. ○ War is idealised, because he’s not talking about the horrors of it, he’s grateful and extremely patriotic. ○ “Hearts at peace” is contradictory: he talks about peace while fighting in war. FOCUS: 2 TYPES OF SONNET ● Petrarchan sonnet: ○ Two stanzas of 4 lines ○ Turning point ○ Two stanzas of 3 lines. ● Shakespearean sonnet: ○ Three stanzas of 4 ○ Turning point ○ A rhyming couplet (distico a rima baciata).
