Samuel Beckett was an Irish novelist, poet and playwright, who was born in 1906 in Dublin. He studied French, Italian and English at Trinity College, then he went to Paris to work as an English teacher; there he became friend and assistant to James Joyce. He travelled a lot and met his wife in Paris. During the WWI he remained in Paris, He fought with the French Resistance until many members of his group were arrested by the Gestapo and he was forced to flee. After the war Beckett was awarded the ”Croix de Guerre“for his bravery and settled in Paris. Eleutheria (1947) Waiting for Godot (1952): it won great success, thanks to which Beckett became internationally famous. Endgame Molovason, Malone Dies, The Unnamable, Mercier and camier His success led him to a career as a theatre director. In 1969 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature but did not accept it personally because he didn’t want to make a speech at the ceremony. During the next years, he decided to live in a small house, continuing to write and avoiding publicity. In the late 1980s he suffered serious health problems and died in December 1989, Just five months after the death of his wife. Samuel Beckett Life Works Last years Beckett is best known for the plays he wrote, most are considered masterpieces of contemporary world theatre. A tragicomedy in 2 acts originally performed in French in 1953. It’s Centred on the experience of the waiting of the 2 main characters. The story doesn’t have a real plot and was a great shock for its original audience. As a critic wrote, in this novel Nothing happens twice. In this play actions take place in a post-atomic bunker and stages the inability of human beings to overcome their existential loneliness and communicate. A monologue in which a man listens to his own recorded voice telling him about his past happiness. The voice sounds like the voice of a stranger, who is now lost and impotent one of his most disconcerting plays. The work is a long monologue by Winnie, a woman who is buried up to her waist in the first act and up to her neck in the second. It represents the physical inability to use the body. This condition is linked with the shocking contrast between Winnies memories of her happy days, and the current absurd condition of loneliness. After Happy Days, Beckett's theatre became more and more essential. Language was replaced by silence, and he removed movement: this changes corresponded to the authors attempt to translate the existential void through theatre. The result was a series of short plays - dramaticules - which represented powerful dramatic vehicles even if all the traditional elements of drama were progressively eliminated.
