WOOLF © Main life events -Was born in 1882 in London -Grew up in a literary and intellectual atmosphere, his father was a victorian literary critic -She was educated at home by her sister Vanessa; is the victim of violence by his half-brothers -She spent her holiday in Cornwall , that will be the setting of her novels -Her mother's death in 1895 brought her to a nervous breakdown -Her father's death in 1904 produced another period of depression -She moved to Bloomsbury where she became a member of the bloomsbury group : a group of writers against victorian values , artistic conventions , sceptical in religion -Immediately manifests herself as a supporter of women's emancipation( A room of one's own) -She married leonard woolf and they created the Hogart press where she published her first novel “The voyage of out” (1915) -In her latter years she suffers more and more from mental problems and the Second World War precipitates his condition even more. -Unable to bear the pain caused to his loved ones because of his mental instability, he decides to sucidate by drowning in a lake. ® Style -Use of stream of consciousness’ technique -Use modernist of time: short meaningful time units that are expanded by the flow of consciousness of the characters -Influence of Bergson's theory of time : her characters wander with their minds distinguishing the “time of the mind” from the “time of the clock" -Attention to the female figure and to women's emancipation not only in life but also in critical works and essays. e Mrs. Dalloway -Revolutionary plot: narration of six lives during one day in the Bond Street area of London. -Contrast between what happens on the outside and what happens within the characters' minds -Presence of the moment of being : the initial balance is broken by the arrival of the oldman symbol of the regret of things not experienced .
